The RoleThe New York Times is looking for an operational owner and highly organized self-starter to join our Newsroom Operations team as an Operations Manager. You will provide hands-on support and oversight of numerous logistics involved in the smooth daily operation of several assigned department(s) - News Platforms and Data, T Magazine and others.
We are looking for a quick learner and creative problem solver who is capable of handling the ever-changing demands of a fast-paced newsroom environment. You will guide tasks across the finish line for the desks in the newsroom. Key to this will be supporting members of our masthead and our journalists with a variety of daily responsibilities and short- and long-term projects. This includes being at the center of on-the-ground coordination of both in-office and offsite events, ensuring execution of on-site logistics and meals for key news coverage events, ensuring that administrative operational tasks are completed by internal deadlines so that operations on the desk run continually and uninterrupted. You will report directly to a Senior Manager of Newsroom Operations.
This role will be Hybrid, with a required in-office presence of 4 days a week. The schedule of these 4 days can fluctuate based on the needs of the desks, and during some peak news cycles, you may be required to be on site for 5 days during those weeks.
Responsibilities:- Serve as the primary, accountable operational contact for members of the masthead, department heads, and journalists, resolving operational roadblocks independently.
- Responsible for on-site setup of various in-office events including mock elections, team all hands gatherings of staff from around the country, team lunches and various similar events, and also serving as a production coordinator for all such events. including live coverage setups, catering logistics, seating arrangements, and equipment deployment during breaking news cycles.
- Oversee complex equipment setups for assigned desks, special coverage teams, and events, ensuring that all hardware, workstation, and specialized technical configurations in real-time to ensure journalists have fully functioning tools.
- Work with the Newsroom Finance team to help create annual budgets and provide oversight of those budgets, including monthly closes, supplying additional financial reports.
- Manage work and vacation schedules and maintain accurate time banks in Workday, and work with Payroll to verify time banks for transfers, departures, and annual payouts.
- Manage a travel calendar and be sure anyone traveling on assignment is properly set up on the company's business travel accident insurance.
- Approve expenses and travel costs in Workday.
- Manage and process freelancers and vendors' payments, working with the Contracts Manager
- Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable for assigned departments
- Work with HR and recruiting teams to assist with position management transactions
- Facilitate Workday management, including onboarding new employees and helping them to get the training, equipment, and information they need
- Keep staffing lists, org charts, and various email distribution lists up to date with any staffing changes in the department
- Purchase supplies and equipment, keep track of all departmental expenses, including capital spending and outside vendor spending
- Work in Zip for independent contractor onboarding, sourcing events and purchasing
- Be available for a variety of tasks that come up, often urgently, including troubleshooting, assisting writers and editors,with on-site and off-site needs, etc.

Basic Qualifications:- 5+ years of experience in an operational or administrative role
- Ability to drive projects forward
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience dealing with detailed and confidential and private concerns
- You can work and keep an optimistic attitude while maintaining a keen sense of urgency
- Be accessible after hours or on weekends when circumstances require
- Impeccable organizational and time management skills; ability to multitask, prioritize and work under deadline pressure
- Ability to work with all levels of management and staff and manage the needs of a team of 100+ employees and leaders
Preferred Qualifications:- Bachelor's degree preferred, or equivalent combination of training and experience

The annual base pay range for this role is between:
$85,000-$100,000 USD
