Summary

The Neurocritical Care Nurse Practitioner provides advanced nursing care for the comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with complex neurological conditions in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting. Working in collaboration with physicians, nurses, and other interdisciplinary team members, the NP delivers high-quality care for patients with conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, status epilepticus, neuromuscular failure, and post-neurosurgical complications.

Job Description

Perform comprehensive assessments, neurological exams, and interpret diagnostic tests (CT, MRI, EEG, labs, etc.) Manage critically ill neuro patients in collaboration with intensivists and neurologists Perform and assist with procedures such as central line placement, arterial line placement, lumbar punctures, and ventilator management (as credentialed) Monitor and manage intracranial pressure, seizures, and cerebral perfusion Participate in daily ICU rounds and contribute to treatment planning and decision-making Provide education to patients, families, and staff about neurological conditions and treatment plans Document clinical assessments, interventions, and patient responses in the electronic health record (EHR) Assist with transitions of care, including discharge planning and communication with rehab or step-down units Participate in quality improvement initiatives, morbidity and mortality reviews, and staff education Maintain current knowledge of advancements in neurocritical care through continuing education

Qualifications

Master’s or Doctorate degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program. If APRN was licensed prior to August 1, 1995, master's degree in nursing is preferred.

Minimum 1–2 years of experience in critical care or neurology setting preferred

Current licensure as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner in each state of practice. Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) permit to prescribe controlled substances in each state of practice. State Controlled Substance License (if required by State) National board certification as an Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP-BC) or ACNPC-AG), Acute Care Adult (ACNP-BC), Additional certifications require approval from a market executive leader: Family (FNP-BC) or (FNP–C), Adult-Gerontology Primary Care (AGPCNP-BC) or (AGNP), Adult (ANP) Certification in Neurocritical Care (e.g., CCRN or CNRN) preferred Obtains and subsequently maintains required specific competencies and certifications as outlined on privilege form. Privileging documents and related credentialing requirements will supersede this job description in defining minimum qualifications, criteria, and scope of practice, if variation between documents exists.
