Department Overview

Campus IT Infrastructure (CITI) is part of Berkeley IT and brings together the engineering, implementation, and operation of UC Berkeley's core IT infrastructure. CITI delivers essential services supporting the institution's evolving academic, research, administrative, and operational needs. Its two primary service areas are Communications and Network Services (CNS), which provides campus networking, telecommunications, voice, security video, and related physical infrastructure services; and Data & Platform Services (DPS), which provides data center, cloud, database, storage, backup, operating system, observability, and related platform services. This position is located within the CNS Network Services team's Engineering and Specialized Services group and supports the campus Security Video service.

Position Summary

The Network Security Video Engineer Lead serves as the technical lead for enterprise security video services and supporting infrastructure. This position is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and operational support of security video systems, cameras, and related network components. The Network Security Video Engineer Lead coordinates with cross-functional teams to support projects, system upgrades, and service improvements while ensuring reliable and secure video operations for customers and end users.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the technical lead for the security video team to ensure timely response to requests and incidents, and verifies adherence to processes and procedures. Coordinates documentation updates based on feedback to support the team and customers in utilizing network security video services. Reviews camera inventory updates (additions/removals) in supporting systems. Performs quarterly audits of firewall and user access logs and policy and proposes recommendations to address findings. Consolidates and reports items requiring management review, and collaborates with managers on team growth and training opportunities.

  • Coordinates with project, infrastructure, and construction teams on timelines and deliverables to ensure resourcing and transparency. Ensures timely and complete communication with partners, customers, and external entities.

  • Evaluates customer needs regarding security video requirements. Evaluates new technologies to address known issues, improve existing service, or expand service offerings. Manages access controls and templated views for departments and end-users. Updates video software mapping system to aid users' understanding of their camera locations. Configures navigation in camera management systems such as links to views, motion control and alarms. Trains end users on video program operation.

  • Reviews, and tracks security video components in customer proposals and provides technical input. Leads design review, install audit, and final validation for large new developments using external design services, and supports external design review for smaller projects.

  • Troubleshoots complex issues in data, video access network components and electronics. Works with network, cloud, server, and database teams during upgrades and replacements to ensure stability and compatibility with the video cameras and systems. Performs quarterly user access, firewall log, and firewall policy reviews to verify expected communications behavior.

  • Installs, maintains, and decommissions security video cameras, and the supporting physical and logical infrastructure.

  • Identifies and selects training opportunities for professional development. Participates in cross-functional group discussions, activities and efforts and other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated thorough knowledge of professional communications and network concepts necessary to resolve issues using established parameters, creativity and independent judgment, escalating as necessary.
  • Thorough understanding of various network hardware platforms, network related protocols and software including understanding of OSI layer 3 protocols at a basic level and layer 2 protocols at a complex level and related technical standards critical to the operation of interconnected networks.
  • In-depth experience with network diagnostic and performance management tools and software.
  • Thorough and broad knowledge and experience working with network management systems.
  • Ability to gather, organize and analyze data in the completion of a variety of functional assignments.
  • Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated diverse problem-solving skills.
Education / Training
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Genetec Omnicast™ Administrator and Advanced Administrator (OTC-001 & OTC-002) (Preferred)
  • Genetec Security Center™ Enterprise Certification Training (ETC-001) (Preferred)

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $96,068.88 - $130,000.00.
  • This is an exempt, monthly-paid position.
  • This is a full-time (40 hours/week) Career position eligible for UC benefits.

  • This is a primarily on-site position requiring work at campus facilities and construction sites. The employee must be available to work on site five days per week as needed. Limited telecommuting may be considered after onboarding, subject to supervisor approval and operational needs, and is not guaranteed. Exact arrangements are determined in partnership with your supervisor to meet role responsibilities and department needs and are subject to change.
  • This is not a visa opportunity. This position does not include sponsorship of a new consular H-1B visa petition that would require payment of the $100,000 supplemental fee.
