Full Job Description
The Role
We are looking for a Motor Electromagnetic Design Engineer to develop PMSM and BLDC motors for integrated robot actuators. You will own the electromagnetic design from topology and sizing through prototype characterization, working with mechanical, thermal and drive engineers to deliver performance within the actuator's real packaging, voltage, current and duty-cycle limits.
Responsibilities
Evaluate motor topologies and size active materials for required torque-speed performance, efficiency and mass, including frameless or outrunner configurations where appropriate.
Design slot and pole combinations, winding layouts, magnets, laminations and air gaps; evaluate saturation, losses, cogging torque and torque ripple.
Build electromagnetic FEA models and analytical checks; document assumptions, material properties and sensitivity to manufacturing tolerances.
Co-design the motor with thermal and mechanical engineers, accounting for heat paths, retention, clearances, assembly and manufacturability.
Work with drive and firmware engineers on motor parameters, bus voltage, current limits, back-EMF and operating envelopes before design release.
Support suppliers and prototype builds; characterize motors on the bench or dynamometer and correlate measured constants, torque, efficiency and temperature to predictions.
Minimum Qualifications
Hands-on electromagnetic design experience with PMSM or BLDC motors, including a design that was built and experimentally characterized.
Strong understanding of winding design, magnetic circuits, materials, loss mechanisms and torque production.
Proficiency in an electromagnetic design or FEA tool such as Motor-CAD, JMAG, Ansys Maxwell, Flux or an equivalent workflow.
Ability to connect simulation to test data and work directly with mechanical, thermal, inverter and manufacturing engineers.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with frameless, outrunner, high torque-density or low-cogging motors for robotics, servos, drones or EV traction.
Experience optimizing winding manufacture, magnet retention, lamination production or motor assembly with suppliers.
Python or MATLAB for design sweeps, data analysis and model correlation.
