A Snapshot of Your Day As Metrology Engineer, you will support the strategic Gas Services growth programs. You will play a critical role in integrating advanced structured light scanning inspection capabilities within the Winston-Salem Additive Manufacturing team to help achieve aggressive throughput targets and optimize component costs for high-performance gas turbine parts.
Your day will focus on advanced metrology programming and execution, data analysis and quality assurance, and continuous improvement of inspection workflows. These core areas directly support the rapid turnaround and high quality-control standards required in additive manufacturing production environments. You will develop, program, and execute structured light scanning and coordinate measuring machine (CMM) inspection programs, perform high-precision 3D optical scanning and measurement activities, and analyze inspection data to validate component conformance.
Working closely with engineering, quality, and production teams, you will investigate dimensional non-conformances, identify root causes, and support corrective actions. You will also optimize inspection workflows to reduce cycle times, increase throughput, and support component delivery schedules while partnering with Additive Manufacturing design and production engineers to improve manufacturing process capability, establish standard operating procedures, and support inspection best practices throughout the manufacturing process.
How You'll Make an Impact - Develop, program, and execute structured light scanning (e.g., GOM/ZEISS ATOS) and coordinate measuring machine (CMM) inspection programs for complex additive manufacturing components.
- Perform high-precision 3D optical scanning, laser scanning, and tactile measurements while calibrating, maintaining, and troubleshooting metrology equipment to ensure measurement accuracy, repeatability, and compliance with applicable standards.
- Analyze 3D scan data and generate comprehensive inspection reports, comparing physical parts to CAD models using nominal-to-actual comparisons and GD&T principles.
- Collaborate with engineering and quality teams to investigate dimensional non-conformances, identify root causes, implement corrective actions, and maintain metrology datasets that support data integrity and traceability throughout the product lifecycle.
- Optimize inspection workflows to reduce cycle times, increase throughput, and support aggressive component delivery schedules for Columbus II, Orion, and other key business initiatives.
- Partner with Additive Manufacturing design and production engineers to provide design-for-inspection (DFI) feedback, improve manufacturing process capability, establish standard operating procedures (SOPs), and train production personnel on metrology tools and scanning procedures.
What You Bring - Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- 5+ years of experience in metrology engineering, quality inspection, or high-precision manufacturing.
- Proven experience with 3D optical/structured light scanning systems and application of GD&T principles in an industrial environment.
- Experience developing and executing structured light scanning (GOM/ZEISS ATOS) and coordinate measuring machine (CMM) inspection programs.
- Proficiency with 3D metrology software, including GOM Inspect, PolyWorks, or Geomagic.
- Knowledge of CAD modeling and analysis tools, including NX and SolidWorks.
- Knowledge of additive manufacturing processes, statistical process control (SPC), and data analysis.
- Experience with root cause analysis, technical documentation, and reporting.
- ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE), GD&T Professional Certification (ASME Y14.5), and ZEISS/GOM Scanning Certified Specialist certifications are preferred.
- Candidates with more experience can be considered for a higher level or vice versa.
