Full Job Description
This is professional medical work providing supervision of professional, medical and nursing staff to meet the needs of patients within a nursing home setting. The work is performed in accordance with standards prescribed by the medical profession. This employee works under the general direction of the Nursing Home Administrator but involves the immediate supervision of staff members concerned with the medical needs of residents. Does related work as required.

Responsibilities/Typical Work Activities:
  • Aligns with the American Medical Directors Association (AMDA/PALTC) "Roles of the Medical Director."
  • Provides oversight to the medical and advanced provider practitioner (APP) staff. Oversight includes, but is not limited to, antibiotic stewardship, auditing compliance with regulatory and monthly notes, adequacy of documentation, fluency with facility's electronic medical records (EMR) (currently PointClickCare), psychotropic regulatory oversight, hospital transfer activity and data collection;
  • Confers with and provides direction to the various personnel charged with the responsibility for providing professional, medical and health-related services;
  • Attends professional meetings and provides policy and procedure oversight/updates;
  • Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement (QAPI) and attendance at QAPI, department head and other facility administrative meetings;
  • Adjunct in the admissions process.


Full Performance, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics:
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of general medicine and surgery.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of general medicine.
  • Quality Assurance/Performance Improvement (QAPI) and attendance at QAPI, department head and other facility administrative meetings.
  • Ability to diagnose and treat a variety of diseases and injuries.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of Federal and State regulations as they apply to skilled nursing facilities.
  • Knowledge of clinical standards of practice related to patients in a nursing home setting.
  • Ability to provide direction and supervision to employees.
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
  • Excellent communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

A. Graduation from an accredited school of medicine and three years of general medical training; and

B. Board certified/eligible in internal medicine or family practice.

C. Must join the American Medical Directors Association (AMDA/PALTC) within one year of employment, and/or have an existing, active Certified Medical Director (CMD) certification.

Special Requirement:

License to practice medicine issued by the New York State Department of Education. Possession of license at time of appointment. Appointees must maintain a current license throughout their employment in this title and maintain good standing with New York State Department of Medical Professions.
