Full Job Description
A Day in the Life of a Mechanical Designer at Hanson

As a Mechanical Designer, you will support the planning, design, and construction of building mechanical systems for a variety of facility projects. Working alongside engineers and project managers, you will help develop innovative and practical solutions for clients while gaining experience across multiple project types.

Here's a snapshot of what you would do in this role:

  • Conduct facility studies, assessments, and evaluations, including:
  • Existing system due diligence reviews
  • Facility condition assessments
  • Feasibility and conceptual design studies
  • Probable construction costs
  • Indoor air quality evaluations
  • Utility master planning
  • Assist in the design of:
  • HVAC systems
  • Building automation systems and energy management systems.
  • Plumbing systems
  • Fire protection systems
  • Special piping systems


  • Prepare construction drawings and contract documents using Revit.
  • Perform field investigations and document existing mechanical systems.


  • Assist engineers with:
  • Load calculations
  • Energy modeling
  • Equipment selection
  • System layouts and design development


  • Support the preparation of technical specifications, reports, and design documentation.
  • Participate in shop drawing reviews and construction administration activities.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams to deliver high-quality engineering solutions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by project and department leadership.


What We're Looking For

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience designing and drafting (modeling) mechanical building systems (including HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection).
  • Experience with building systems commissioning is a plus.
  • E.I.T. certification.
  • PE or ability to get licensed in one (1) year a plus.


Technical Skills
  • Proficiency with Revit.
  • Experience with Trane Trace or similar energy modeling/load calculation software is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems.
  • Ability to interpret construction documents, including engineering drawings and specifications.


Professional Skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to engineers, clients, contractors, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships both internally and externally.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to learn new technical concepts and software tools.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Interest in supporting a variety of project types and technical assignments.


Additional Requirements
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with team members located in multiple office locations.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for project-related assignments and field investigations.
  • Ability to work additional hours when necessary to meet project schedules and client commitments.


This is an exempt position. The salary range for this role is between $95,000 - $115,000 depending on experience.
