Job Overview & Responsibilities

ULA is seeking a Laboratory Scientist with daily assignments to include the following:
  • Support launch-related testing:
    • Conduct testing and evaluate results for mission critical test specimens.
    • Coordinate specimens, test plans and operational media sampling with site-supporting laboratories, review results for completeness, and interpret results as required.
    • Write laboratory test reports and report test results to internal customers.
  • Day-to-day laboratory work will include (but not limited to): quantitative chemical analysis of hydrocarbon fuels and other gaseous commodities/propellants, wet/bench chemistry, standard laboratory housekeeping, microscopy, particle counting and cleanliness verification.
  • Analytical chemistry equipment support including calibration, functional checks and resolution of equipment anomalies.
  • Conduct perishable materials shelf-life extension testing for select materials.
  • Conduct part and material failure analysis investigations, as required.
  • Provide directions and propose solutions for unique testing needs.
  • Participate in the review of discrepant parts and materials, work to identify root cause, and develop and implement preventative/corrective actions across all sites.

This is an onsite position at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (CCSFS) and reports up through the Parts, Materials, and Processes organization within ULA.

Minimum of 6 years of related work experience

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry or similar field.
  • Minimum 6+ years of day-to-day hands-on experience in chemistry lab setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate priorities, conduct testing, and resolve test anomalies with minimal oversite or assistance.
  • Hands-on experience performing quantitative chemical analysis with the following types of laboratory testing equipment - Gas Chromatograph, FT-IR, Optical Microscope, Gas-moisture analyzer, Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) Spectrometer, Kinematic Viscometer, Flash point analyzer.
  • Prior experience with analytical chemistry test method development and instrument troubleshooting.
  • Prior hands-on experience performing chemical analysis in accordance with Military, NASA and commercial specifications such as ASTM.
  • Comfortable working with both compressed flammable and oxidizing gases as analysis media.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written, including presentation skills).
  • Ability to qualify for a DoD Secret Clearance.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior hands-on laboratory experience with the following - Cryogenic propellant analysis including liquid oxygen, liquid hydrogen, liquid natural gas, RP1, precision clean evaluations including particle counting and NVR analysis, hydraulic fluid analysis, trace gas analysis.
  • Experience with preparing and working with trace level analytical standards.
  • Unknown materials characterization experience.
  • Prior hands-on experience working under one or more of the following laboratory quality control programs - ISO 9001, ISO 17025 or AS9100.
  • DoD Secret Clearance.
