Full Job Description
Overview

Risk Engineering builds and operates Unified Risk, BHN's central risk and fraud decisioning platform, supporting real-time transaction risk scoring, order risk decisioning, manual reviews, 3DS enforcement and fraud detection across BHN's brand portfolio. This role will own a distributed team of engineers across multiple US locations and reporting to the Sr Director of Engineering.

Responsibilities

 

  • Directly manage ~10 engineers across multiple US locations, owning career growth, performance, hiring, and day-to-day team health
  • Stay hands-on: contribute code, review architecture decisions, and unblock technical execution on Protego roadmap items
  • Partner with Product Owners to shape and prioritize the Risk Engineering roadmap
  • Own sprint execution and Jira hygiene including backlog grooming, sprint planning, velocity tracking
  • Manage stakeholder relationships across Risk Ops, Compliance, Payments, and Identity teams
  • Own AWS cost accountability for your team's services, monitor spend and drive optimization aligned with our sustainability/green infrastructure goals
  • Champion AI-assisted engineering practices within the team, using tools like Claude Code and GitHub Copilot to increase velocity and code quality
  • Represent the team in cross-functional planning and escalate blockers proactively
Qualifications

 

  • 8+ years hands-on professional experience building commercial products with Java
  • 2+ years of management experience leading and mentoring engineers on distributed teams
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent; Master's Degree in Computer Science a plus
  • Significant experience designing and building REST services and familiarity with microservice architectures
  • Proven experience designing and building scalable, high-throughput, low-latency systems
  • Comfortable with relational and NoSQL database design and SQL
  • Knowledge of security best practices as they relate to web application development, such as OWASP
  • Experience working in a cloud environment, preferably AWS, including cost management and optimization
  • Experience using Agile methodologies to plan and deliver increments of functionality
  • Working knowledge of core ML concepts (precision, recall, F-score, model training/evaluation) to effectively partner with our Data Science team on risk model integration
  • Strong grasp of AI/LLM concepts, including agents and agentic workflows, with the ability to evaluate and lead adoption of the right AI solution for engineering problems
  • Comfort working with data to identify and analyze fraud patterns, translating findings into engineering and product decisions
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to clearly communicate technical concepts in non-technical terms

Bonus

  • Experience with UI frameworks like Angular and React
  • Experience with fraud/risk systems, payments, or high-scale transactional platforms
