Job Summary

The Mainframe Storage Engineer is responsible for the engineering, administration, optimization, and strategic direction of enterprise storage platforms supporting IBM Z (z/OS) and distributed environments. Serving as a senior technical subject matter expert within Enterprise Storage, this role ensures the availability, resiliency, security, recoverability, and performance of storage services supporting critical business functions. The engineer leads complex technical initiatives, drives storage modernization efforts, supports regulatory and cyber resiliency requirements, collaborates across infrastructure, operations, application, and security teams, and mentors junior engineers while promoting operational excellence and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

The engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, administering, and optimizing enterprise storage solutions including IBM DS8000, IBM FlashSystem, IBM Storage Scale (GPFS), IBM Storage Virtualize, and Pure Storage platforms across multiple data centers. Responsibilities include storage provisioning, performance analysis, capacity planning, lifecycle management, hardware refreshes, and modernization initiatives while ensuring service levels for availability, resiliency, and recoverability are met. The role also provides technical leadership for SAN infrastructure supporting FICON and Fibre Channel environments, including Cisco MDS and Brocade fabrics, zoning administration, connectivity management, and performance optimization.

The engineer designs and supports disaster recovery and business continuity solutions utilizing Metro Mirror, Global Mirror, HyperSwap, FlashCopy, PPRC, and related replication technologies. This includes leading recovery exercises, validation testing, continuity planning, and ensuring recovery objectives align with business and regulatory requirements. The role further supports enterprise data protection and cyber resiliency programs through technologies such as Dell PowerProtect Data Domain, Dell DLm, IBM TS7700, IBM Virtual Tape Library, SecureAgent VTL, Cobalt Iron Compass, Rubrik, Copy Services Manager, and Safeguarded Copy, with responsibility for immutable recovery strategies, ransomware recovery readiness, and recovery testing.

As a senior technical contributor, you would lead incident response, root cause analysis, and complex infrastructure changes while partnering with security and risk teams on encryption, key management, privileged access controls, audit readiness, and regulatory compliance initiatives. The role is also responsible for maintaining architecture standards, operational procedures, technical documentation, and runbooks while providing technical leadership and mentorship across the Enterprise Storage organization.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience, with a minimum of five years of enterprise storage engineering experience and at least three years supporting IBM Z and z/OS storage environments. Candidates should possess strong experience supporting business-critical production environments and a solid understanding of enterprise storage architecture, SAN infrastructure, disaster recovery, data protection, and operational support within regulated environments. Experience working within incident, change, problem, risk, and compliance management frameworks, combined with strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and technical leadership skills, is required.

Technical Skills & Experience

The successful candidate will possess advanced knowledge of IBM DS8000, z/OS storage environments, DFSMS, DFHSM (HSM), SMS administration, catalog management, storage groups, IDCAMS, ICKDSF, TSO, JCL, FICON architecture, and CKD/ECKD storage administration, including performance analysis, allocation strategies, and recovery procedures. Experience with Dell DLm, IBM TS7700, IBM Virtual Tape Library, SecureAgent VTL, disaster recovery validation, archival strategies, and recovery testing methodologies is required.

Additional expertise should include IBM FlashSystem, IBM Storage Scale, IBM Storage Virtualize, IBM Storage Insights, Pure Storage FlashArray, Metro Mirror, Global Mirror, HyperSwap, FlashCopy, and PPRC technologies. Strong familiarity with Cisco MDS SAN infrastructure, Brocade Fibre Channel fabrics, SAN zoning, Fibre Channel networking, FICON connectivity, and storage performance troubleshooting is required. Experience with Dell PowerProtect Data Domain, Cobalt Iron Compass, Rubrik, Copy Services Manager, Safeguarded Copy, Splunk, ServiceNow, enterprise monitoring platforms, and automation technologies such as Python, PowerShell, Shell scripting, and Ansible is highly desirable.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience within financial services or other highly regulated industries is preferred, along with experience supporting large-scale IBM Z environments, enterprise disaster recovery programs, and storage modernization initiatives. Knowledge of NYDFS cybersecurity requirements, NIST, cyber resiliency frameworks, SIEM integration, privileged access management, and regulatory governance standards is desirable.
