This role is part of Blue Origin Operations, which is comprised of Integrated Supply Chain, Test Operations, Safety, Quality, and Mission Assurance. This includes Manufacturing and Supply Chain support across all Blue Origin facilities.
As part of a talented and hardworking team of engineers, you will partner with engineering analysis teams across structural, mechanical, fluids, ECLSS and thermal subsystems at Blue Origin Lunar Plant 1. You'll own manufacturing tooling and fixtures analysis. You will work every day with design engineers, manufacturing engineers and technicians. Beyond validating tooling design before use, your analysis directly informs disposition of non-conformances on human-rated hardware.
Responsibilities
- Structural and mechanical analysis: hand calcs and FEA for strength, stiffness, stability, fatigue, and fastener and joint margins, on tooling and lander hardware.
- Lifting and handling equipment: size and verify below-the-hook lifters and handling fixtures to ASME BTH-1 / B30.20 and Blue requirements; define proof tests and acceptance criteria.
- Thermal analysis: steady-state and transient models for hardware installs, thermal hardware and process tooling (bake-out, cure and thermal-cycle fixtures), including thermal growth and distortion.
- Fluids and ECLSS analysis: pressure drop, flow and pressure-vessel / line margin checks; support ECLSS hardware and fluid test rigs.
- Loads and environments: define handling, transport, test and thermal load cases and factors of safety with design, test and safety.
- Write the record: clear analysis reports with assumptions, margins and limitations; peer review others' work; correlate models to proof and test data.
- Influence design early: work in the CAD with designers, run quick trades, and steer toward lighter, simpler, safer designs.
- Non-conformance disposition support: perform analysis of defect conditions found during manufacturing, whether due to damage or fitment issues, and develop standard repair analyses that support updated acceptance criteria.
- State-of-the-art analysis capability development: develop analysis techniques in emerging fields such as softgoods and biomechanical applications.
Minimum Qualifications (required)
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Manufacturing or Aerospace Engineering (other relevant fields may apply) from an accredited university.
- Understanding materials, thermodynamics, kinematics and manufacturing processes.
- Proficiency with an FEA package (e.g., Ansys, Abaqus, Nastran/Femap) and strong hand-calc skills to check it.
- Working thermal and fluids fundamentals: conduction, convection, radiation and pipe flow.
- Ability to write a clear, defensible analysis report.
Desired
- Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
- Passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
- Hands-on build experience: you have taken a design through fabrication and test.
- Analysis across more than one discipline: structures, thermal, fluids or ECLSS.
- Thermal tools (e.g., Thermal Desktop / SINDA) or CFD; lifting devices to ASME BTH-1.
- Nonlinear analysis: contact, large deflection, or bonded and composite joints.
- Correlating analysis to test (strain gauges, thermocouples, proof tests, load cells).
- CAD skills (PTC Creo/Windchill preferred) and scripting (Python, MATLAB) for automating analysis.
Culture Statement
Don’t meet all desired requirements? Studies have shown that some people are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single desired qualification. At Blue Origin, we are dedicated to building an authentic workplace, so if you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly with every desired qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.
Benefits
- Benefits include: Medical, dental, vision, basic and supplemental life insurance, paid parental leave, short and long-term disability, 401(k) with a company match of up to 5%, and an Education Support Program.
- Stock Options for all regular employees (working at least 20 hours/week)
- Paid Time Off: Up to four (4) weeks per year based on weekly scheduled hours, and up to 14 company-paid holidays.
- Dependent on role type and job level, employees may be eligible for benefits and bonuses based on the company's intent to reward individual contributions and enable them to share in the company's results, or other factors at the company's sole discretion.
