Full Job Description
Job ID: 18069

The Lead Software Engineer/Architect provides hands-on technical architecture and engineering leadership for DYMO's software ecosystem, including the web application, desktop application, cloud services, APIs/SDKs, local print device services, data models, software security, device integration, and external-system interoperability. The role owns detailed software requirements, software ecosystem architecture, critical software technical decisions, design code review, final software technical acceptance for internally and externally developed software.

This role reports to the Sr. Manager, Software and Software Quality Assurance Engineering and operates within the software technology roadmap, priorities, delivery commitments, processes, staffing model, and budget established by the manager. The role partners with the Sr. Lead Systems Engineer Product Architect, who owns overall product-system architecture, system requirements, cross-discipline interfaces, system integration, verification strategy, and system-level technical acceptance. The Software Engineer Lead Architect remains hands-on in the codebase while strengthening internal technical capability and reducing long-term dependence on external development partners.

Responsibilities
• Define and own detailed software ecosystem architecture across the DYMO Hub Web App, DYMO Desktop Application, Azure cloud services, local print and device services, APIs/SDKs, data models, software security, device integration, and external-system interoperability.
• Translate allocated system requirements and approved customer workflows into detailed, measurable, traceable, and testable software requirements and software acceptance criteria.
• Make and communicate software-level technical trade-offs within the approved roadmap, product-system architecture, system interfaces, delivery commitments, and engineering standards; contribute software expertise to broader system-level decisions.
• Serve as DYMO's internal technical authority for externally developed software, including architecture direction, design and code review, acceptance criteria, technical debt assessment, and final software technical acceptance.
• Write, review, debug, and ship production code across the software ecosystem; maintain a hands-on presence in the codebase as a working engineer, not solely as a reviewer.
• Define and maintain technical standards for code quality, security, scalability, reliability, performance, observability, maintainability, and production readiness.
• Define the technical allocation interfaces across web, cloud, desktop and local services, APIs/SDKs, printer firmware in partnership with the Sr. Lead Systems Engineer Product Architect and relevant domain technical owners.
• Own software security architecture and detailed software security requirements; partner with Systems Engineering, IT/Security, SQA, and external specialists on threat modeling, security testing, vulnerability management, and technical remediation.
• Evaluate emerging software technologies and recommend architecture and technology choices that support the manager-owned software technology roadmap and improve platform capability, maintainability, security, and engineering efficiency.
• Evolve the software ecosystem through common APIs, shared modules, reusable components, and UX integration that maximizes reuse across DYMO products while meeting approved product-system requirements.
• Lead software architecture, design, code, security, and technical-quality reviews; document critical technical decisions and ensure implementation conforms to approved software architecture.
• Provide technical leadership through architecture guidance, design and code reviews, pairing, troubleshooting, and knowledge sharing to strengthen engineering quality and internal technical capability.
• Provide technical estimates, implementation plans, dependencies, and feasibility assessments; execute within manager-approved scope and priorities and escalate risks affecting delivery commitments, system interfaces, or product requirements.
• Partner with SQA to ensure software testability and enable automated, security, reliability, integration, and performance testing; provide technical readiness evidence for software release decisions.

Job Qualifications

Education, Experience and Technical Leadership Skills
• Bachelor's degree in software engineering, computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical field required; advanced degree a plus.
• 10+ years of software engineering experience architecting and delivering production web, desktop, cloud, and multi-tenant platforms.
• Deep experience architecting and operating production cloud platforms on Microsoft Azure, including containerized services, messaging, identity and security, data services, secrets management, observability, and CI/CD.
• Hands-on experience developing modern production web applications; React and TypeScript experience strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated expertise in API/SDK architecture, external-system interoperability, local device integration, and cloud-to-device integration; experience with printers, IoT, or connected products preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to derive detailed software requirements and acceptance criteria from allocated system requirements and approved customer workflows.
• Experience working with technology partners and the ability to technically direct, review, challenge, and accept partner-delivered software.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to create architecture decision records, interface definitions, detailed technical requirements, and acceptance criteria.
• Ability to influence and lead across functions without relying on direct organizational authority.
• Experience applying secure software engineering practices, threat modeling, vulnerability management, and software security testing.
• Approaches AI-assisted tooling and automation as a force multiplier and incorporates them appropriately into architecture, development, review, testing, and team workflows.

Strategic Mindset and Additional Attributes
• Combines deep software architecture expertise with hands-on engineering execution.
• Works effectively within manager-owned roadmap and delivery priorities while exercising clear technical authority inside the software boundary.
• Partners effectively with the Sr. Lead Systems Engineer and Product Architect to maintain clear separation between software ecosystem architecture and complete product-system architecture.
• Balances technical quality, security, scalability, reliability, performance, maintainability, and production readiness when making software-level decisions.
• Builds internal technical capability through practical engineering leadership, knowledge sharing, and rigorous technical reviews.
