Role Summary: As a Lead Robotic Welding Technologist you will leverage your deep expertise in welding technology, with specific expertise in robotic welding systems. This role will be responsible for developing, programming, and maintaining robotic welding processes, working closely with Innovations, AI and control teams for PLC and AI execution, ensuring high-quality welding standards, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives within our innovation projects. Provides guidance and mentorship to junior staff and operators. Works independently under general direction while adhering to company standards and engineering specifications.
Responsibilities :
• Welding Process Development & Improvement:
• Develop and optimize welding processes (GMAW GTAW primary) to meet engineering requirements and specifications;
• Collaborate with the engineering team to design and implement efficient welding processes;
• Develops and adapts procedures to solve complex technical welding challenges
• Conduct welding trials and evaluate the results to optimize robotic welding performance;
• Analyze welding quality and implement corrective actions to improve process reliability and weld quality;
• Robotic Welding Programming & Welding Operation:
• Program, operate, and maintain robotic welding systems including Miller, UR, Fanuc, ABB, Yaskawa;
• Develop welding procedures and parameters for robotic systems to meet product specifications and quality standards;
• Work closely with AI and control teams to integrate PLC programming and automation into welding processes;
• Troubleshoot and resolve issues with robotic welding equipment and processes;
• AI Integration & Automation:
• Collaborate with the AI team to execute advanced AI techniques into welding processes;
• Utilize AI-driven insights to refine welding parameters and improve welding autonomy;
• Quality Assurance:
• Ensure that all welding operations comply with company standards, industry regulations, and customer requirements;
• Maintain detailed records of welding parameters, inspections, and quality control data;
• Prepare technical reports and make recommendations to improve welding processes and automation initiatives.
• Safety & Compliance:
• Adhere to all safety protocols and promote a culture of safety within the workplace;
• Ensure that all welding activities comply with relevant safety and environmental regulations.
• Team Supervision
• Provide guidance, mentorship, and training to junior welding technologists, technicians, and operators.
• May plan, schedule, or supervise the work of a small team on specific projects.
Qualifications and Experience :
• Diploma or Degree in Welding Technology is required.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in welding technology, with a focus on robotic welding systems. Journeyman preferred.
• Proficiency work experience in programming and operating robotic welding equipment (e.g., FANUC, ABB, Yaskawa, UR).
• Experience with various arc welding processes (MIG, TIG, etc.) and excellent "textbook" knowledge and understanding of welding and weld processes.
• Strong understanding of welding technology, metallurgy, and welding codes/standards.
• Proven ability to adapt procedures and solve difficult technical problems.
• Excellent English written and verbal communication skills required.
• Ability to detect defects in welding and accurately conduct caliper measurements (strong math skills).
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and communicate effectively with cross-functional teams.
• Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail and organizational and time management skills.
• Must be able to perform extensive standing, walking and bending activities during prolonged periods of time.
• Valid Driver License - Class 5 required.
• Ability to travel across Canada, USA, and internationally for field installation and customer support.
Education requirements:
• Certification in robotic welding or similar disciplines is a plus.
• Proficiency in CAD/CAM software and welding simulation tools is an advantage.
• Welding foundation level 2 or equivalent
• Welding class "A"
