As a Kubernetes Engineer - OpenShift, you'll sit at the center of WWT's container platform strategy in a role that blends strong partnership and hands-on engineering. You'll act as a liaison between the infrastructure team and application development teams, helping them design, containerize, and onboard their workloads to Kubernetes and OpenShift, guiding them through approved standards, self-service patterns, and best practices for running applications on the platform.
You'll also help design, deploy, and maintain large-scale, highly available Red Hat OpenShift clusters, and build and maintain the CI/CD and GitOps pipelines that move application code from commit to production safely and efficiently. You'll help extend these platform capabilities into the cloud, with exposure to Microsoft Azure and other cloud platforms as WWT's container strategy grows.
With guidance from senior engineers, you'll join an on-call rotation and make a direct impact on the reliability, security, performance, and scalability of the platform's application teams depend on.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a liaison between the infrastructure team and application development teams, guiding them through onboarding, containerization patterns, and self-service deployment to Kubernetes/OpenShift.
- Assist in designing, building, and maintaining OpenShift clusters - control plane, worker nodes, networking, storage, and Operators - ensuring high availability, performance, and capacity for production workloads.
- Maintain OpenShift platform health through node lifecycle management, cluster upgrades, and Operator Lifecycle Manager (OLM), keeping the fleet current and secure.
- Build, maintain, and continuously improve CI/CD and GitOps pipelines that automate build, test, and deployment for application teams.
- Manage and maintain Argo CD Applications and ApplicationSets, driving automated, git- based deployment and lifecycle management of workloads across clusters.
- Use Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management (ACM) to manage policy, governance, and application lifecycle across multiple OpenShift clusters.
- Partner with application development teams to containerize applications, define resource requests/limits and autoscaling policies, and design namespace, RBAC, and network policy structures.
- Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code and automation (Ansible, Helm, Kustomize, Terraform) to standardize cluster provisioning, configuration, and upgrades.
- Partner with security team to implement and maintain platform security controls, including image scanning, Security Context Constraints, admission policies (e.g., OPA/Gatekeeper), and secrets management (Vault).
- Configure and maintain monitoring, logging, and alerting (Prometheus, Grafana) to ensure platform health and rapid incident response.
- Extend platform capabilities into the cloud, working with Microsoft Azure (Azure Red Hat OpenShift/AKS) and other cloud platforms to support hybrid and multi-cloud container strategies.
- Maintain reliability through capacity planning, backup and disaster recovery, change management, and tested rollback procedures; execute change tickets with validation; and participate in an on-call rotation.
- Produce technical documentation, runbooks, and onboarding guides, communicating clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
