The Analyst will evaluate agricultural investments and portfolios by combining rigorous valuation and financial modelling with an understanding of farm operations, regional land and water markets, crop economics, and agricultural risk. The role supports acquisitions, portfolio management, appraisal review, and long-term planning.
Position Responsibilities: Acquisitions responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain asset-level DCF and operating models for farmland and related agribusiness opportunities
- Collaborate directly with acquisitions, regional operations, farm managers, agronomists, water specialists, appraisers, and other subject matter experts
- Prepare investment committee memoranda that clearly connect operational assumptions, regional market evidence, valuation conclusions, key risks
- Present valuation conclusions and recommendations to investment committees and respond to questions on key assumptions
Portfolio Management responsibilities:
- Develop and maintain valuation and performance models for existing agricultural investments and portfolios
- Collaborate with portfolio managers, regional operations teams, and property managers to monitor value drivers and operating performance
- Coordinate and review third-party agricultural appraisals analyze outputs against internal underwriting and long-term plans
Other responsibilities:
- Develop strong working relationships across Manulife Agriculture, external appraisers, farm managers, brokers, lenders, consultants, and other agricultural market participants
- Work with global and regional teams, including business development, operations, and the sustainability team
- Seek ways to improve underwriting, appraisal review, portfolio monitoring, data quality, and valuation capabilities
Required Qualifications:- Bachelor's degree in agricultural economics, agribusiness, finance, accounting, real estate, economics, or a related quantitative field. CFA, CAIA, ASA, MAI, ARA, RPRA, AFM, MBA, or relevant graduate study is a plus
- Analytically rigorous and detail-oriented, with sound judgment and the ability to challenge assumptions rather than treating model outputs as conclusions
- Advanced Microsoft Excel and financial modelling skills capable of developing scenario analysis and sensitivities; experience with Power BI, GIS, SQL, Python, R, or agricultural data platforms is a plus
- Ability to independently analyze farm-level financial statements, operating budgets, production assumptions, and capital plans
- Effective team member with strong organization and communication skills; able to manage competing deadlines and collaborate with investment and field-based professionals
- Ability to build relationships with investment professionals, farm operators, property managers, appraisers, brokers, consultants, and other external parties
- Mature and willing to approach problem solving with openness and willingness to understand others' perspectives with the goal of working towards a workable solution.
- High degree of ownership, self-motivation, professionalism, and willingness to spend time learning agricultural operations in the field
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate detailed agricultural and valuation analysis into clear, concise committee-level conclusions
- Able to work effectively with dispersed teams across agricultural regions and time zones. Qualified candidates located near major U.S. agricultural markets will be considered
- Commitment to relevant professional development, which may include CFA, CAIA, ASA, ARA, RPRA, MAI, AFM, or other agriculture, appraisal, or investment credentials
- Willingness to travel approximately 10% of the time for property visits, regional market work, appraiser and operator meetings, and team collaboration
