Herold Engineering is hiring an Intermediate Structural Engineer(Bridge/Marine) for our Nanaimo, BC office, As the ideal candidate you will work closely with experienced Structural/Bridge Engineers who will provide mentorship and collaboration. You'll contribute to projects ranging from small assignments to large, multidisciplinary undertakings.

In your role you will be responsible for leading engineering projects from planning through execution, ensuring high-quality deliverables, client satisfaction, and effective coordination between technical teams, subconsultants, and stakeholders. You will work closely with other experienced technical leads, engineers, and specialists across disciplines.

Your main responsibilities

  • Perform condition assessments, field reviews, and prepare engineering reports for existing structures;
  • Deliver greenfield and brownfield structural designs, including steel, concrete, and timber;
  • Prepare and review design calculations, analysis models, drawings, and technical specifications;
  • Conduct periodic engineering technical review of works-in-progress to verify general conformity with design documents, codes and project values;
  • Support construction-phase services (site presence, field reviews, respond to RFIs, shop drawings, material submittals, and facilitate change management);
  • Provide mentorship to junior engineers/technologists and promote team-based learning;
  • Support project engineering: work planning, coordination, schedule/budget awareness, and quality control;
  • Collaborate with colleagues to support ongoing technical strengthening of understanding of concepts and lessons learned;
  • Manage engineering projects from initiation to close-out, including scope definition, budgeting, scheduling, risk management, and quality assurance;
  • Lead internal project teams and serve as the main point of contact for clients, partners, and external stakeholders;
  • Oversee project resource planning, workload distribution, and coordination across multidisciplinary teams;
  • Support proposal development, including technical input, costing, and client presentation;
  • Support and review technical deliverables (reports, designs, specifications, field observations) to ensure alignment with project scope and applicable standards;
  • Coordinate subcontractors, monitor progress, and ensure timely completion of project phases
  • Establish and maintain strong, long-term relationships with government agencies, private-sector clients, and community partners;
  • Facilitate effective communication between technical staff, leadership, and clients, ensuring expectations and deliverables are clearly understood;
  • Ensure all project work conforms to Herold Engineering's quality procedures, safety policies, and regulatory requirements;
  • Apply and promote health and safety rules and comply with Englobe's quality procedures.

  • Be familiar with the process of periodic engineering review of works-in-progress, to determine general conformity with design documents;
  • Be familiar with current local code requirements;
  • Must have past experience working on a broad range of marine and bridge projects are preferred.

The salary range for this position is $95,000 to $125,000 CAD base per annum, based on the responsibilities of the role, internal equity, and current market benchmarks. The final offer will be determined based on a combination of factors, including the candidate's skills, experience and qualifications, their positioning within our internal compensation structure, and relevant geographic cost-of-living considerations, where applicable. This range represents a realistic and good-faith estimate of the compensation we expect to offer for this role.
