Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking an Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer to join our Mining Geotechnical and Tailings team in Markham, Ontario. The successful candidate will be a strong technical geotechnical engineer with experience in site characterization, analysis and design for mining, tailings, mine waste, dams and related infrastructure. You will lead or coordinate geotechnical work, guide junior staff, collaborate with senior technical leads and project managers, and support client relationships, project delivery and the continued growth of the Ontario mining practice.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Plan, coordinate and interpret geotechnical investigations, including boreholes, test pits, laboratory testing, CPT programs and geotechnical instrumentation.
  • Develop geotechnical models and design parameters based on site investigation, laboratory, CPT and monitoring data.
  • Complete and review geotechnical analyses, including 2D and 3D slope stability, seepage, settlement, liquefaction, seismic and, where appropriate, stress-deformation assessments.
  • Support the design, assessment and construction of tailings storage facilities (TSFs), waste rock storage facilities (WRSFs), stockpiles, open pits, embankments, foundations, dams, water management structures and other mining infrastructure.
  • Contribute to PFS, FS, detailed design and construction-phase projects through preparation and review of design criteria, calculations, technical memoranda, reports, drawings, specifications and engineering recommendations.
  • Review and interpret instrumentation, monitoring and performance data and develop practical geotechnical recommendations.
  • Support operational geotechnical and tailings services, Engineer of Record (EoR) activities, dam safety inspections and reviews, and facility performance assessments.
  • Provide field engineering and construction support, including review of site conditions, earthworks, monitoring data, construction records and quality documentation.
  • Coordinate technical work assignments and project deliverables in collaboration with project managers, project directors and senior technical staff.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship and review of work completed by engineering graduates and junior staff.
  • Contribute to technical excellence, quality management, knowledge sharing and continuous improvement within the geotechnical and tailings practice.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with clients, contractors and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Support proposals, scope development, budgeting, work planning and business development activities.
  • Apply Stantec's quality, health, safety and environmental procedures and contribute to practical, technically sound and defensible engineering solutions.


Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Strong understanding of soil mechanics, geotechnical characterization and the behavior of earth structures.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and interpreting geotechnical investigations and developing geotechnical design parameters.
  • Strong experience with geotechnical analyses relevant to mining, tailings, dams and mine infrastructure, including slope stability and seepage; experience with liquefaction, seismic and deformation analyses is an asset.
  • Experience with the design or assessment of TSFs, mine waste facilities, stockpiles, open-pit slopes, dams or related mining infrastructure.
  • Proficiency with GeoStudio applications such as SLOPE/W and SEEP/W. Experience with SIGMA/W, PLAXIS, FLAC, RS2/Slide2, Settle3 or comparable tools is an asset.
  • Experience interpreting CPT data using CPeT-IT or comparable methods is an asset.
  • Ability to organize technical work, provide clear direction to junior staff and coordinate effectively with senior technical leads and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong technical writing, verbal communication and client interaction skills.
  • Working knowledge of project delivery, including scope, schedule, budget, quality and risk management.
  • Commitment to safety, quality, technical excellence and professional ethics.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to project sites, including remote mining locations, as required.
  • Valid Canadian driver's license.

Education and Experience

Master's degree in Civil, Geological or Geotechnical Engineering from a recognized university. A PhD degree in Geotechnical Engineering is an asset.
Approximately five to twelve years of relevant experience in geotechnical consulting, mining, tailings or dam engineering. Candidates with a different experience level and a strong technical fit may also be considered.
Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing with Professional Engineers Ontario, or eligible for registration in Ontario.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
