Overview

Specific coastal design tasks will cover the development and evaluation of design criteria, plans and specifications for new and repaired coastal structures. The successful candidate will possess great communication skills and have a demonstrated ability to work within a high functioning team. As part of the role, you will have the opportunity to travel as required to project sites. Your ability to work without supervision alongside your strong project management skills will serve you well in this role.

As an Intermediate Coastal Engineer, your commitment to innovation and technical excellence will be paramount. Leadership, curiosity and passion are traits we foster within our group. This role could be based in Vancouver, BC, Montreal, QC, St. John’s, NL, or Toronto, ON. The team is Canada wide and other AtkinsRéalis offices could be considered.

Your role

  • Coordinate work with other engineers, coastal engineering professionals and support services personnel.
  • Be responsible for maintaining quality standards and quality control.
  • Plan, program, carry out or coordinate the detailed engineering phases of a part of a major project or all a medium-sized project.
  • Condition assessment of shorelines including coastal structures such as breakwaters, revetments and groynes.
  • Perform preliminary engineering design and/or review design and drafting work of junior engineers, designers or CAD technicians.
  • Awareness of project budgets, contracting strategies, scheduling document preparation.
  • Construction supervision of coastal works.
  • Support Business Development initiatives.

About you

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree (preferred) in Ocean or Coastal Engineering, or closely related field. Fluency in the working language, English, both spoken and written; French is an asset.
  • EGBC member or possibility of obtaining P.Eng. designation within 2 years of hiring, or member of any other Canadian engineering association.
  • Minimum 7 years' experience in the implementation of dredging, flood risk reduction, shore protection or stabilization, breakwaters, living shorelines, beach and marine habitat restoration, metocean studies, sediment transport and water quality modelling, coastal planning and management and marine infrastructure construction projects since graduation with a consulting firm or marine related client.
  • Experience developing construction documents including design criteria, drawing sets, specifications, cost estimating.
  • Proven knowledge of program coding (e.g. MathCAD or MATLAB) and application of coastal engineering numerical modelling software (SWAN, BREAKWAT, TELEMAC, DELFT3D, etc.).
  • Application of coastal design techniques and a solid knowledge of trends in the coastal sector.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal).
