The major duties of the Intelligence Research Specialist position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Serves as a senior IRS, a subject matter expert for the most complex illegal national and international criminal and gang activity related to firearms, as well as explosives, arson, other criminal activity, and law enforcement intelligence operations.
- Represents ATF on ATF and joint agency intelligence committees to develop collection plans, guides, and manuals and validate intelligence research reports.
- Collects, evaluates, analyzes, and extracts information from various sources, sometimes involving raw intelligence, and compiles it into useful, finished analytical products, reports, and correspondence.
- Develops complex reports pertaining to firearms and sources of firearms used in crimes, gang structure and leadership, national and international firearms activity and projections, crimes with firearms in various police jurisdictions, criminal background information and trends.
- Finished products, either in written, graphic, or oral form, are of a most complex nature or are often extremely sensitive or highly classified. Incumbent provides information and advice on significant and extremely critical intelligence trends, developments.

QualificationsTo qualify for the Intelligence Research Specialist position at the
GS-13 level, candidates must also have at least one year of
specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level
GS-12 by the closing date of this announcement.
Specialized experience is demonstrated experience, which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position. Experience must be in the normal line of progression or must be related to the work of the position advertised and must be reflected in resume.
Specialized experience must include all of:- Collecting, evaluating, analyzing various types of intelligence data to support investigative operations; AND
- Preparing and presenting briefings on a variety of intelligence topics to other law enforcement and intelligence agencies and organizations; AND
- Utilizing advanced computer operations, intelligence collection and storage to maintain intelligence collection databases; AND
- Reviewing data and producing intelligence reports.
