Full Job Description
AECOM is seeking a highly motivated Inside Plant (ISP) Fiber Optic Engineer to support the planning, design, coordination, and delivery of fiber optic pathway and passive connectivity infrastructure for high-tech, mission-critical, and technology-intensive clients and facilities.
This position is focused on the physical infrastructure that enables reliable, scalable, and resilient fiber connectivity within buildings and across complex campuses. The role will support the design and coordination of inside plant pathways, fiber optic cabling, telecommunications spaces, racks and cabinets, fiber distribution and termination systems, and the critical transition between outside plant (OSP) and inside plant (ISP) infrastructure.
Projects may include hyperscale and cloud infrastructure, advanced manufacturing and semiconductor facilities, research and technology campuses, telecommunications facilities, mission-critical environments, and other large-scale, technology-intensive programs.
The successful candidate will understand the complete physical connectivity path, from the point where outside plant infrastructure enters a facility through telecommunications and distribution spaces to the passive interface with network and technology equipment.
This role requires a practical understanding of how fiber infrastructure is planned, designed, coordinated, installed, tested, documented, and maintained. The engineer will work closely with multidisciplinary design teams to develop solutions that address pathway capacity, physical route diversity, resiliency, constructability, maintainability, scalability, and future expansion.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree + 4 year's experience in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline, or demonstrated equivalent professional experience in telecommunications and fiber optic infrastructure design.
• Experience designing, coordinating, or supporting ISP telecommunications, structured cabling, fiber optic, mission-critical, high-tech, or comparable technology infrastructure.
• Working knowledge of fiber optic cabling, pathways, termination and distribution systems, telecommunications spaces, racks, cabinets, and passive connectivity infrastructure.
• Understanding of physical pathway and cable-routing requirements.
• Ability to read, develop, and review engineering drawings, specifications, diagrams, schedules, and technical design documentation.
• Experience coordinating telecommunications infrastructure with other engineering and building disciplines.
• Ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary engineering and design teams.
• Strong technical communication, documentation, coordination, and problem-solving skills.
• AutoCAD, Civil 3D Proficiency
Preferred Qualifications
• BICSI Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) certification preferred.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred.
• Experience supporting high-tech, hyperscale/cloud, advanced manufacturing, semiconductor, telecommunications, research, mission-critical, or similarly complex facilities and campuses.
• Experience with large-scale or high-density fiber optic infrastructure.
• Strong understanding of ISP pathway and passive fiber optic connectivity design.
• Experience coordinating OSP-to-ISP infrastructure and building entrance systems.
• Experience with entrance rooms, meet-me rooms, telecommunications rooms, distribution spaces, network rooms, and other technology spaces.
• Knowledge of fiber optic cable types, strand counts, connector systems, patching, termination, splicing, cable management, and associated passive infrastructure.
• Understanding of physical fiber route diversity, redundancy, resiliency, capacity planning, and shared-fate risk.
• Experience developing fiber routing plans, riser diagrams, connectivity diagrams, cable schedules, splice documentation, termination schedules, and rack/panel layouts.
• Knowledge of applicable TIA, BICSI, NEC, NFPA, and other telecommunications design standards and practices.
• Experience working with client-specific engineering standards, specifications, details, and design criteria.
• Experience with AutoCAD, Revit, BIM coordination, Bluebeam, or similar engineering design and review platforms.
• Experience supporting projects throughout planning, detailed design, construction, testing, acceptance, and closeout.
• Experience working with geographically distributed project teams and supporting multi-site or program-level delivery.
