Position Summary
The Industrial Software Engineer develops and maintains software that controls production equipment, enables manufacturing automation, and supports custom electrical test systems. This role combines PLC/HMI programming with PC-based application development, connecting user requirements, hardware, and software to deliver reliable equipment and integrated systems.
Reporting to Al Rasmussen, this individual contributor works with production, test, engineering, and IT to support existing applications and develop new automation. The role offers hands-on ownership of equipment software within an expanding Advanced Manufacturing organization.
Key Responsibilities
• Develop, maintain, and improve PLC programs and HMI applications for production equipment and new automation systems.
• Develop and maintain PC-based applications for custom electrical test equipment, including integration with existing hardware interfaces and software libraries.
• Maintain, troubleshoot, and convert legacy software applications, including applications in the VB.NET/.NET environment, as equipment and technology evolve.
• Translate end-user needs and equipment concepts into software requirements and working solutions; investigate ambiguous requests and apply sound engineering judgment.
• Integrate production and test equipment with systems used to collect and communicate manufacturing data, including support for Ignition SCADA deployment.
• Integrate existing commercial machine vision and AI-enabled inspection solutions into equipment and manufacturing processes, including potential weld inspection and X-ray or video analysis applications.
• Coordinate with IT on computers, software interfaces, and systems deployed to the production floor.
• Provide software expertise and escalation support to equipment personnel who lead frontline production-equipment troubleshooting.
• Participate in equipment qualification and user training for new or modified systems.
• Manage assigned programming work independently, communicate project status and technical decisions, and collaborate with cross-functional partners.
Basic Qualifications
• Approximately five years of relevant programming experience, including demonstrated PLC programming and PC-based application development.
• A relevant degree in electronics, electrical engineering, computer science, or a related technical field, or equivalent demonstrated technical experience.
• Hands-on experience programming or integrating hardware, industrial equipment, or test systems beyond classroom-only projects.
• Strong programming fundamentals and the ability to learn and adapt across programming languages, development environments, and PLC platforms.
• Ability to diagnose software and system issues, explain the engineering reasoning behind solutions, and translate operational needs into functioning equipment software.
• Ability to work independently, communicate directly and honestly, and take ownership of assigned work.
• Ability to work fully onsite in Chandler, Arizona, and travel approximately 5% to other company sites.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience with VB.NET and the broader .NET development environment, particularly for electrical test or equipment applications.
• Experience with Productivity PLCs and C-More HMIs. Experience with other PLC/HMI platforms is also relevant when accompanied by demonstrated adaptability.
• Experience with Ignition SCADA software.
• Electronics knowledge and experience with electrical test equipment or test automation.
• Experience with Cognex or other industrial machine vision and automated inspection systems.
• Familiarity with National Instruments Measurement Studio.
• Experience in manufacturing, industrial automation, or a systems integration environment.
• Experience integrating commercial AI-enabled inspection tools and collecting data from production or test equipment.
Work Environment and Schedule
This is a fully onsite, salaried role in Chandler, Arizona. Work takes place in a development lab and on the production floor as projects require. The team works a five-day schedule, with an early start preferred to align with production and engineering partners. Specific daily hours will be confirmed during the interview process.
