Controls Systems Engineer

Johnson Controls is a global leader in building technologies, HVAC controls, and integrated low-voltage systems. In this role, you will help design and deliver complete building control solutions that support reliable, efficient operations for customers and project teams.

Role Overview

As a Controls Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, configuration, and operation of complete building control systems, including related low-voltage sub-systems such as lighting, nurse call, and data networks. You will work closely with field teams, customers, consultants, and subcontractors to ensure projects are delivered with quality, timeliness, and technical accuracy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and configure technically complex building control systems in accordance with contract documents and project requirements.
  • Create flow diagrams, sequence of operations, bill of material, network layouts, and electrical schematics as needed.
  • Develop and test HVAC software programs required to operate the system according to project intent.
  • Coordinate drawings, equipment schedules, and submittal packages to support installation and project execution.
  • Select, order, and track materials for assigned projects.
  • Coordinate factory-mounting processes to align with factory and project schedules.
  • Assist with loading and commissioning system-level and network-level controllers.
  • Validate complete system functionality and troubleshoot issues with subcontractors and other trades.
  • Provide field change information to support as-built drawings and software updates.
  • Keep management, contractors, and customers informed of project progress, risks, and issues.
  • Support site-specific training for owners and operators on the total building control system.
  • Participate in release meetings with the project field team and perform value engineering when appropriate.
  • May provide work direction to Systems Design Assistants.
  • Adhere to all safety standards with a strong focus on employee and subcontractor safety.

How You Will Do It
  • Own your work with accountability for quality, timeliness, safety, and integrity.
  • Stay close to the project details and remove obstacles for field teams and customers.
  • Use clear technical judgment to solve problems, improve every day, and keep work moving forward.
  • Collaborate across engineering, field installation, subcontractors, and customers to deliver one coordinated solution.
  • Translate contract requirements into practical design deliverables that are accurate, buildable, and easy to execute in the field.
  • Keep communication proactive so stakeholders understand design decisions, progress, and any issues that could affect delivery.
  • Use a disciplined approach to commissioning and troubleshooting to confirm proper system operation before handoff.
  • Apply value engineering thoughtfully to support cost-effective results while maintaining customer satisfaction.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in controls systems, programming, installation, commissioning, or related engineering work.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the construction or HVAC industry.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of control theory, automatic temperature controls, building automation systems, and related building subsystems.
  • Experience integrating low-voltage building sub-systems using industry protocols such as BACnet.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical wiring diagrams, and contract documents.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical information to non-technical audiences.
  • Advanced computer skills, particularly with computer-related drafting tools.

Nice to Have
  • Experience with Niagara/Tridium.
  • Previous exposure to commissioning, field troubleshooting, or site-based training on building control systems.
  • Experience working with system-level controllers and low-voltage building integrations.
