Head Golf Professional

The Spanish Hills Club | Camarillo, California

Salary: $110,000 - $125,000 annually, commensurate with experience
Bonus Opportunity: Up to 15% of base salary annually

Position Summary

The Head Golf Professional is responsible for promoting the game of golf while delivering exceptional service and hospitality to Members and guests. This position oversees all golf operations, including tournament management, golf shop merchandising, staff leadership, teaching programs, member engagement, budgeting, and financial performance. The Head Golf Professional serves as a key member of the club leadership team and works closely with the General Manager, Assistant Golf Professionals, Membership Director, Golf Course Superintendent, and Private Event Director to ensure a premier golf experience while achieving operational and financial goals.

Essential Responsibilities

Golf Operations & Member Experience
  • Direct and oversee all daily golf operations.
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute club tournaments, member events, leagues, and outside outings.
  • Foster exceptional relationships with Members and guests to ensure a welcoming and engaging golf experience.
  • Serve as host and tournament director for major golf events and championships.
  • Establish and manage the Club's instructional and player development programs.
  • Provide golf instruction and coaching as business needs and schedule permit.

Leadership & Staff Development
  • Recruit, train, schedule, supervise, and develop Assistant Golf Professionals, Golf Shop Attendants, Cart Attendants, and other golf operations staff.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings and training sessions to ensure service excellence and operational consistency.
  • Complete annual performance evaluations and provide ongoing coaching and development.
  • Promote a positive, professional, and team-oriented culture throughout the golf operation.

Financial & Business Management
  • Prepare and manage annual operating budgets and financial forecasts for golf operations.
  • Monitor revenue performance, expenses, and profitability of the golf shop, tournaments, instruction, and related golf services.
  • Maintain appropriate inventory levels and oversee all merchandising efforts in accordance with approved purchasing plans and vendor programs.
  • Ensure accounting controls, cash handling procedures, and operational standards are consistently followed.

Club Collaboration
  • Work closely with the General Manager and department leaders to enhance the overall Member experience.
  • Partner with the Membership Director to support membership growth and retention initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the Golf Course Superintendent to coordinate golf course conditions and event planning.
  • Coordinate with the Private Event Director to align golf-related activities with club events and outings.
  • Participate in club committees and provide strategic recommendations related to golf operations.

Professional Development
  • Represent the Club at PGA functions, tournaments, and educational programs as approved.
  • Maintain PGA membership and professional standing through continued participation and education.

Safety & Compliance
  • Respond to Member and guest concerns professionally and effectively.
  • Resolve complaints and complete incident reports when necessary.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and ensure compliance with all club policies and applicable safety standards.
  • Attend all required meetings, training programs, and club functions.

Qualifications

Required
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a Golf Professional in a private club, resort, or comparable golf facility.
  • Completion of Level 2 of the PGA Golf Professional Training Program (GPTP).
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in tournament operations, merchandising, instructional programs, and golf operations management.
  • Ability to work independently while fostering a collaborative team environment.
  • Strong financial acumen, including budgeting, forecasting, and revenue management.

Preferred
  • PGA Class A Membership or advanced PGA credentials.
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Hospitality Management, Recreation Management, or a related field.
  • Experience in a high-end private club environment.
  • Proven success in growing golf participation, instructional programs, and golf shop revenue.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the day.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with Members, guests, and staff.
  • Must be able to analyze situations quickly and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and composure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to lift and move golf merchandise, tournament materials, and equipment as needed.

Working Conditions
  • Position requires significant outdoor work with exposure to varying weather conditions, including heat, sun, and humidity.
  • Indoor administrative work and event coordination responsibilities are also required.
  • Availability to work weekends, holidays, evenings, and tournament schedules as needed.
