What We're Looking For

This opportunity entails serving as a Geotechnical Engineer III within HNTB's growing geotechnical practice, supporting a wide range of transportation infrastructure projects throughout planning, design, procurement, and construction. The successful candidate will apply geotechnical engineering principles and practical field experience to develop foundation and earthwork recommendations for roadway, railroad, and bridge projects, while working closely with multidisciplinary project teams.

Responsibilities include coordinating and observing subsurface exploration programs; reviewing and interpreting geotechnical investigation data; performing engineering analyses and design calculations; and preparing geotechnical reports, technical specifications, contract documents, and construction-phase recommendations. The position requires a strong understanding of soil and rock characterization, foundation systems, retaining structures, embankments, pavement support, and construction considerations associated with transportation infrastructure projects.

This role offers a balance of office and field responsibilities, including participation in subsurface investigations, coordination with drilling and testing subcontractors, evaluation of geotechnical conditions, development of design recommendations, and support of geotechnical aspects of construction. The engineer will collaborate with structural, roadway, railroad, and construction teams to deliver practical, effective solutions and help resolve complex subsurface and foundation-related challenges.

Working under the guidance of senior geotechnical staff while exercising independent engineering judgment, this position provides opportunities to broaden technical expertise, assume increasing project responsibilities, mentor junior staff, and contribute to the successful delivery of critical infrastructure projects for HNTB's clients.

What You'll Do:

  • Completes assigned work within the schedule and number of hours provided.
  • Assist in the development of project specifications.
  • Responsible for development of discipline specific engineering project elements/deliverables such as reports, designs, and plans.
  • Aids in the coordination and productivity of project team members.
  • Provides technical guidance to less experienced engineering project team members.
  • Works closely with other disciplines and on multi-discipline projects.
  • Performs quality control reviews of discipline - specific engineering project elements/deliverables.
  • Assists with coordination and planning of schedules, hours, and distribution of work within discipline.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 4 years of relevant experience, or
  • Master’s degree in Engineering and 3 year of relevant experience, or
  • PhD in Engineering and 2 years of relevant experience

What You'll Bring:

  • Optimizing work processes by using knowledge of the most effective and efficient ways to get things done with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Independently progresses the majority of designs and tasks required of the discipline.
  • Exhibiting experience with Microsoft Office Suite, Ensoft LPile/APile/SHAFT, Geostudio Slope/W and/or Rockscience Slide, and MicroStation and/or AutoCad.
  • Exhibiting a thorough understanding of the application related to engineering, geometric and algebraic principles.
  • Managing time, proactively forecasting, and communicating project development needs.

What We Prefer:

  • Master’s degree in Engineering with 4+ years industry experience
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification
  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification
  • American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification (depending on discipline)

The approximate pay range for New Jersey is $91,710.82 - $156,485.61. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.
