Job DescriptionWe are currently seeking an Environmental specialist to support a wide variety of environmental projects. The preferred candidates will provide technical leadership and project support for the planning, design, permitting, installation, testing, and evaluation of deep injection wells, aquifer storage and recovery (ASR) wells, and potable water supply wells. Applies hydrogeologic principles to characterize subsurface conditions, develop well construction recommendations, support regulatory compliance, and oversee drilling and construction activities throughout all project phases. As a member of this team, you would contribute to CDM Smith's mission by:
- Plan and execute hydrogeologic investigations to support deep injection well, ASR well, and water supply well projects.
- Evaluate regional and site-specific hydrogeology, stratigraphy, groundwater flow systems, and aquifer characteristics.
- Develop well siting recommendations based on hydrogeologic, regulatory, and operational considerations.
- Design production wells, injection wells, monitoring wells, and test wells, including casing, screen, filter pack, and seal specifications.
- Prepare drilling programs, well construction standards, and technical specifications for bidding and construction.
- Oversee drilling, coring, geophysical logging, well installation, development, and rehabilitation activities.
- Direct field hydrogeologic investigations including lithologic logging, aquifer testing, groundwater sampling, and water quality characterization.
- Analyze aquifer performance test data including step-drawdown tests, constant-rate pumping tests, injection tests, and recovery tests.
- Develop groundwater models and predictive evaluations to support wellfield development and injection well permitting.
- Evaluate injection zone suitability, confinement integrity, and potential groundwater impacts.
- Support Underground Injection Control (UIC) permit applications and compliance activities.
- Coordinate with state and federal regulatory agencies regarding permitting, monitoring, and reporting requirements.
- Prepare technical reports, hydrogeologic assessments, well completion reports, and design memoranda.
- Review contractor submittals, drilling logs, geophysical data, and construction documentation.
- Provide construction-phase oversight and quality assurance during drilling and well installation.
- Troubleshoot well performance issues and develop recommendations for rehabilitation, optimization, or replacement.
- Support client meetings, technical presentations, and stakeholder coordination efforts.
- Mentor junior staff in hydrogeologic analysis, field investigation techniques, and well design practices.
Skills & Abilities- Expert Knowledge of computer assisted design and drafting (CADD) 3D and 4D software and practices.
- Expert knowledge of scientific methods and processes.
- Expert Knowledge of Microsoft business software (excel, word, etc.).
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in Science or related discipline.
- Registration as a licensed Professional Geologist, as certified by ASBOG.
- 10 years of related experience.
- Domestic and/or international travel may be required. The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and the essential functions of the position, which may vary depending on workload and project demands.
- Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
Preferred Qualifications- Bachelor's degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Geological Engineering, or related field.
- Professional Geologist (PG) license.
- Experience with deep injection wells, water supply wells, ASR systems, or municipal wellfield development.
- Knowledge of groundwater hydraulics, aquifer testing, well construction methods, and drilling technologies.
- Familiarity with UIC programs, water management district regulations, and groundwater permitting requirements.
- Proficiency in hydrogeologic interpretation, data analysis, and technical report preparation.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.

This pay range is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels for the geographic location assigned to the position. In addition to geographic location, a candidate's salary is determined by several other factors including, but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, relevant work experience, skills, required certifications, and education/training.
Additional CompensationAll bonuses at CDM Smith are discretionary and may or may not apply to this position.
