About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Financial Controller to own and lead our financial operations and support strategic decision-making as we continue to expand our business.

The Financial Controller will be responsible for financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, internal controls, and financial analysis to support key business decisions. This role reports directly to the CEO and works closely with the agency's leadership team to provide financial insight, clarity, and operational discipline.

This is a hands-on, senior individual contributor role with leadership responsibility. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment and enjoys being close to the numbers while helping shape how the business scales.

What you get to do
  • Financial Management & Reporting
  • Prepare accurate monthly and annual financial statements in accordance with ASPE.
  • Analyze financial results, compare with budget, and provide insights and recommendations for improvements.
  • Prepare and present financial reporting packages and summaries for the CEO.
  • Own and directly execute core accounting functions, including AR/AP, payroll, adjusting journal entries, month-end close, and related reconciliations.
  • Plan and manage cash flow to ensure sufficient liquidity for day-to-day operations.
  • Oversee the accounts receivable and payable processes, ensuring timely collections and payments.
  • Lead the annual budgeting and forecasting process, including variance analysis and scenario planning.
  • Process Improvement & Internal Controls
  • Develop and implement scalable financial processes, controls, and systems to ensure processes and internal controls are effective and efficient as the business continues to grow and expand.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, tax laws, and corporate policies.
  • Work closely with external accountants to facilitate the annual reporting process.
  • Strategic & Operational Support
  • Partner with the CEO to provide financial insights, modeling, and performance analysis that support strategic and operational decision-making.
  • Support business planning, cost analysis, and margin optimization.
  • Provide ad hoc financial reporting and analysis to support strategic initiatives.
  • Finance Technology & Systems
  • Oversee accounting and finance-related software tools.
  • Collaborate on implementation and integration of systems to support automation and visibility.
  • People Operations & Systems
  • Oversee and maintain the company's HR platform (Rise), ensuring accuracy across payroll, benefits, onboarding, and offboarding.
  • Coordinate benefits enrollment, changes, and terminations with providers.
  • Support compliance-related documentation, reporting, and record-keeping tied to employee data and compensation.
  • Partner with the CEO and external advisors on government grants, reporting, and people-related financial administration.

You may be a fit for this role if you have
  • CPA designation with 5+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, ideally within a growing business; experience in a digital marketing or professional services environment is an asset.
  • Proven experience managing full-cycle accounting operations and financial reporting in a hands-on capacity.
  • In-depth understanding of financial statements, budgeting, forecasting, and tax compliance.
  • Ability to analyze complex financial data and translate it into clear, actionable insights for non-financial stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks Online, advanced Excel/Google Sheets skills, and other supplementary reporting tools.
  • High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and a proactive, analytical mindset.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; comfortable working cross-functionally.
  • Demonstrated ability to take ownership of a finance function and, over time, help shape and build a finance team as the company scales.

Success in This Role Looks Like
  • You don't just report what happened-you help stakeholders understand what the numbers mean and how they should influence decisions.
  • You invest time in understanding how the business operates, connecting financial outcomes to operational and strategic drivers.
  • You ensure that there is a solid foundation of reliability and accuracy in the financial results due to strong internal controls, high culture of integrity, and discipline in finance processes.
  • You act as a financial thought partner to the CEO and leadership team, bringing clarity, discipline, and insight to planning and decision-making.
  • You understand how the company's core systems and technologies connect across the business and partner with the leadership team to ensure data integrity, system alignment, and timely, accurate information that supports strong, informed decision-making.

Our Work Environment
  • We have a beautiful SW Calgary office location that offers free parking, a gym, and comfortable, tech savvy meeting rooms and workstations.
  • We work onsite to be intentional about optimizing collaboration and creativity on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays (remote work is optional on Wednesdays and Thursdays).
  • Workstations include a MacBook and an ergonomic sit-stand desk.
  • Our 2 kitchen cafes are stocked with really, really good coffee.

Compensation
  • Base salary range will be commensurate with skills and experience, with an expected range aligned to a senior, hands-on Controller role in the Alberta market.
  • We review compensation annually against external data to stay competitive with similar agency roles in Alberta's market.
  • We offer a performance-based bonus structure that rewards impact and excellence.

Benefits
  • Health and Dental (premiums shared 50/50)
  • Long-term disability (Employee paid)
  • Life and Critical Illness Insurance
  • Emergency Travel Medical
  • Employee and Family Assistance Program
  • Group RRSP and TFSA investment savings plan with free access to a Certified Financial Advisor
