The Field MEP Manager is responsible for leading the on-site coordination and execution of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection (MEP/FP) work throughout construction. This position works closely with the project management and site management teams, design professionals, trade partners, vendors, and the client to ensure building systems are installed safely, correctly, and in accordance with the contract documents, project schedule, budget, and quality expectations.
The Field MEP Manager plays an integral role in planning and coordinating MEP activities from early construction through testing, commissioning, and turnover. This role provides field leadership, identifies and resolves coordination issues, monitors progress, and supports the integration of MEP systems with the building structure, envelope, and other trades. The Field MEP Manager reports to the project leadership team and works in close partnership with the Superintendent and Project Manager.
A Field MEP Manager takes proactive responsibility for day-to-day MEP field operations, communicating expectations and resolving issues among subcontractors, foremen, vendors, the design team, and related personnel. The role supports effective sequencing, installation, inspection, and closeout of MEP systems while promoting Shiel Sexton's standards for safety, quality, teamwork, and customer service. The Field MEP Manager performs other related duties as assigned.
Role Expectations and Competencies- Coordinate and oversee daily field activities for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection trades, including subcontractors and third-party vendors.
- Work with the Superintendent, Project Manager, and trade partners to develop and maintain MEP schedules, installation sequences, look-ahead plans, phasing, and site logistics.
- Review drawings, specifications, submittals, and coordination documents to identify conflicts, gaps, constructability concerns, and potential schedule impacts before they affect the work.
- Coordinate MEP installations with structural, architectural, civil, and other building systems to maintain access, clearances, and installation requirements.
- Monitor field progress and workmanship; verify that installed work aligns with approved documents, applicable codes, manufacturer requirements, and project quality standards.
- Coordinate required inspections, testing, system start-up, commissioning activities, and resolution of deficiencies with trade partners, inspectors, the design team, and commissioning providers.
- Track RFIs, submittals, field issues, changes, and outstanding decisions affecting MEP work; communicate potential cost, schedule, and quality impacts to project leadership.
- Identify material, equipment, access, and manpower needs in advance; coordinate delivery, storage, protection, and installation readiness with trade partners and the site team.
- Maintain awareness of MEP schedule milestones and long-lead equipment; proactively escalate risks to procurement, installation, testing, and turnover dates.
- Help ensure MEP systems are properly documented and turned over, including record drawings, operation and maintenance information, warranties, training, and commissioning records.
- Build productive working relationships with subcontractors, foremen, design professionals, vendors, clients, and internal project teams; communicate issues clearly and professionally.
- Demonstrate initiative by anticipating field challenges, evaluating options, and working with the project team to implement timely solutions.
- Contribute to a cohesive project team through collaboration, accountability, mentoring, and modeling Shiel Sexton's culture and expectations.
- Complete assigned HR, safety, and legal compliance training on time.
Qualifications- Five (5) or more years of experience in commercial construction, including substantial experience coordinating or supervising MEP field activities.
- Relevant experience as an MEP Superintendent, MEP Coordinator, trade foreman, or in a comparable field leadership role preferred.
- Bachelor's degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field preferred; equivalent education and relevant experience may be considered.
- Working knowledge of commercial MEP systems, installation practices, construction sequencing, and applicable codes and inspection requirements.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, submittals, and coordination documents.
- Strong communication, organization, problem-solving, and meeting-facilitation skills.
- Ability to work effectively with project teams, trade partners, clients, and design professionals while maintaining a focus on safety, quality, schedule, and customer service.
