Full Job Description
As a Field Application Engineer II (FAE II) at LMI Technologies, you will be a senior technical expert, solution architect, and customer advocate in the factory automation and 3D machine vision space. Based out of our Royal Oak facility, you will champion LMI's industry-leading 3D smart sensor products, leading complex integrations, solving high-level technical challenges, and ensuring seamless deployment across key customer environments.

This role demands an experienced mechatronics or automation professional with strong engineering depth, proven customer-facing experience, and a passion for solving real-world inspection problems on the factory floor. You will act as a core technical bridge between customers, sales account managers, and internal R&D teams.
  • Advanced Sample Testing & Feasibility: Evaluate challenging customer parts and applications using LMI's 3D sensors, generating high-precision feasibility reports and optics/sensor configuration recommendations.
  • System Integration & On-Site Support: Support robot and PLC integrations (Allen-Bradley, Siemens) and configure industrial fieldbus communications (EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus TCP) at customer manufacturing facilities.
  • Lab Validation & R&D Escalation: Reproduce and debug complex customer hardware, software, or optical issues in the lab environment to provide structured root-cause feedback to R&D and engineering product teams.
  • Technical Demos & Training: Deliver technical product demonstrations, hands-on workshops, and advanced system training for existing customers, system integrators, and internal sales teams.
  • Custom Automation & Scripting: Develop custom scripts and software tools (Python, C#, C++, LabVIEW) for application testing, evaluation, demonstration setups, and tailored customer integration workflows.
  • Tradeshows & Technical Marketing: Build interactive, engaging product demonstration setups for major industry trade shows, customer workshops, and application notes/knowledge base articles.
  • Voice of Customer & Product Mastery: Continuously build deep expertise in LMI's 3D sensor portfolio while gathering and synthesizing field feedback to drive future product enhancements.
  • Peer Mentorship: Provide technical guidance, onboarding support, and knowledge sharing to junior application engineers and technical support team members.
Education and Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, or equivalent from an accredited university.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the high-technology, factory automation, robotics, or machine vision industry.
  • Minimum 3 years of direct customer-facing technical support, field application engineering, or client-facing project execution experience.
  • Core Technical Aptitude:
    • Machine Vision & Automation: Proven experience with 3D or 2D machine vision inspection, optical sensors, industrial robotics, or PLC integration.
    • Software Scripting: Proficient with one or more programming environments including Python, C#, C++, Visual Studio, LabVIEW, or ladder logic / PLC programming.
    • 3D CAD Design: Hands-on experience with Autodesk Fusion, SolidWorks, or equivalent 3D CAD modeling software.
    • Electrical & Hardware Setup: Practical skill in basic electrical design, wiring schematics, component assembly, and hardware diagnostic troubleshooting.
    • Mobility & Logistics: Valid passport and willingness/ability to travel domestically and occasionally internationally up to 20-30% of the time.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Exceptional verbal, written, and technical presentation skills.
    • High self-motivation, critical problem-solving skills, and a strong sense of personal accountability ("hustler" mindset) to thrive in an autonomous environment without micromanagement.
    • Demonstrated ability to manage customer expectations under high-pressure plant conditions.
