Description
The Chief of Medical Service at the Providence VA in the Department of Medicine is one of the largest clinical and academic services at the Providence VA Medical Center, comprising 11 sections- Gastroenterology, Pulmonary/Critical Care, Cardiology, Dermatology, Endocrinology, Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Disease, Hospitalist Medicine, Nephrology, Rheumatology, and Neurology. The department is staffed by 57 physicians and a total of 127 employees, and operates approximately 350 clinics. The department is a major teaching site, training 271 trainees across Medicine specialties every year, with internal medicine residents and fellowship programs in Gastroenterology, Pulmonary, Cardiology, Hematology/Oncology, Nephrology, and Rheumatology, and periodic fellows in Infectious Disease and Neurology. Faculty in the service are involved in intramurally and extramurally funded research in cardiovascular, pulmonary, infectious diseases, neurology and dermatology research spanning clinical trials, basic science, data science and health services research. The research program at VA Providence is a $30 million program with centers of excellence in health services research, neurorestoration and neurotechnology and cardiopulmonary vascular biology (https://www.va.gov/providence-health-care/research/).
In addition to the requirements below, the incumbent will be responsible for the academic, clinical, and research activities of the Department of Medicine at the• Providence VA Medical Center and will collaborate with other Providence VA Medical Center service chiefs on system-wide initiatives and operational issues. The incumbent will be expected to develop and expand the academic and teaching programs of the department, oversee staffing and quality of care across all sections, and establish, coordinate, and integrate basic, translational, clinical, health services, or rehabilitation research protocols. A substantial portion of the incumbent's time will be devoted to research, and appropriate research space and start-up resources will be provided.
Teaching:
The incumbent will be expected to develop and participate in the teaching programs of the Department of Medicine at the VA Hospital.
In particular, the incumbent will be expected to:
a. Establish and supervise educational programs for medical students and Medicine residents and
fellows.
b. Actively participate in building the teaching program of the department including interactions
with both medical students and residents in other Departments at the VA Hospital.
c. Provide academic and career-related counseling to students and residents.
d. Maintain a level of involvement with local, state and professional societies and associations commensurate to the position of chairperson of a clinical department.
Research:
The incumbent will be expected to establish, coordinate, and integrate basic or translational research protocols at the Providence VA Medical Center. The incumbent will be expected to establish and sustain an independent investigative program in basic/ translation science, clinical, health services or rehabilitation research. It is expected that substantial portion of the incumbent's time will be devoted to research, and appropriate research space and start-up resources will be provided. The incumbent will serve as a liaison between the Providence VA Medical Center and the various programs of Brown University and its affiliated hospitals.
Service Responsbilities:
The incumbent will be expected to actively participate in all activities of the Division of Biology and Medicine, the Department of Medicine, and The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
In particular, the incumbent will be expected to:
1. Perform the functions of Chief of Medicine at the VA hospital including:
a. Maintain an up-to-date staffing plan in collaboration with the Chief of Staff of the hospital.
b. Review Medicine applicants for staff appointments and make recommendations to the medical staff and Chief of Staff of the hospital.
c. Review and make recommendations on renewal of privileges of staff physicians in the department.
d. Recommend staff salaries to the Chief of Staff after review of the staff person's performance.
e. Maintain effective lines of communication between the Department of Medicine and other hospital departments, including clinical consultation and contribution to educational programs.
f. Promote and supervise research programs within the department and collaboratively with other departments and with Associate Chief of Staff (Research).
g. Assure the quality of care delivered by both technical staff as well as staff physicians in the Department of Medicine.
h. Screen, select and recruit Medicine staff of high caliber.
i. Engage in clinical service activities in his/her area of specialization.
j. Perform other duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Dean of Medicine and the Chief of Staff of the VA Hospital.
Qualifications
Successful candidate must qualify for a full-time medical faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor in the Dpeartment of Medicine. Minimum requirements include: board eligibility or certification in Medicine and/or medical subspecialty, strong clinical background in medicine or medical subspecialty, excellence in patient care and teaching, and a commitment to scholarly participation in the research programs of The Warren Alpert Medical School. It is preferred that the candidate has a proven track record in building and maintaining an externally funded research program. Experience leading a clinical, academic, or research program is highly desirable. A substantial portion of the incoming chiefs time can be devoted to research, and appropriate research space and start-up resources will be provided.
