Job Description:
The opening of the Northern Virginia Science Center is the largest project in the Science Museum's history. As we prepare to open our doors in spring/summer 2027, we're seeking a Facilities Supervisor who is excited to roll up their sleeves and help bring this one-of-a-kind building to life.
In this role, you will be the go-to expert for the building, interactive exhibits, and the systems that keep everything running smoothly. You will supervise Facilities and Exhibit Maintenance staff, coordinate routine and preventive maintenance, manage work orders, troubleshoot problems, and help ensure the facility is safe, comfortable, and ready for visitors each day. You will work with building systems such as HVAC, building controls, electrical and plumbing systems, as well as the technology and equipment that power the museum's interactive exhibits. When specialized repairs are needed, you will coordinate with contractors and service providers.
This is a hands-on position that combines team leadership and coordination, while physically performing maintenance, repairs, inspections, and exhibit-related work. As the museum prepares to open, you will play an important role in pre-opening readiness, including testing building systems and exhibit equipment, identifying and resolving issues, establishing maintenance procedures and schedules, and helping prepare the facility for daily operations. You will also help coordinate required inspections, life-safety system testing, and ongoing compliance with applicable maintenance requirements.
We are looking for someone who enjoys solving problems, is comfortable using technology, is willing to physically repair issues when they arise, and can balance hands-on work with coordinating the day-to-day activities of a team. The position reports to the Science Center's Operations Director and will regularly work with the Science Museum's Director of Facilities in Richmond to help make sure the Science Center is safe, secure, sparkling clean and ready for discovery every day.
The position will be based in Northern Virginia and we're anticipating filling the role sometime this November. Training will take place in Richmond, with the candidate expected to spend 2-3 days a week in Richmond from November-January. Telework or other work arrangement will be made for the remaining days each week until the Science Center is fully constructed.
If you love solving problems, working with your hands, leading a team and being part of something brand new, this is your chance to help build the future of science learning in Northern Virginia.
Interested candidates must apply at https://jobs.virginia.gov/.
Benefits:
The position offers a competitive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, FSA, HRA, HSA, life insurance, 457 and pension plan, short and long-term disability and employee assistance program. The Science Museum has a generous paid time off policy, including vacation leave, four days family & personal leave, eight sick days per year and 12 paid holidays.
The salary range for this position is $77,000 to $87,000. Actual compensation will be determined based on factors such as the candidate's experience and market considerations at the time of offer.
Minimum Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess demonstrated experience in facilities management, maintenance or a related field. Experience in applied arts, industrial design, or fabrication. Supervisory or foreman experience is required. Knowledge of building trades and grounds maintenance, along with proficiency in the techniques, tools, materials and equipment used in facilities and exhibit maintenance.
Extensive knowledge of facilities and grounds maintenance, including the ability to operate, troubleshoot and repair commonly used equipment and computer systems. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings, use power and hand tools for light fabrication and perform minor repairs and maintenance. Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and schedule work to meet project deadlines. Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to objectively assess and prioritize competing demands. Candidates must be able to work effectively in a highly collaborative, fast-paced environment, both independently and as part of a team. Travel between locations is a required part of the position, and a valid driver's license is required.
