Description

Vanderbilt Health is seeking an Executive Medical Director (EMD) for Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital (VPH) Adult Services & Vanderbilt University Hospital (VUH) Psychiatry. The EMD manages the clinical duties of all general, addiction, and geriatric psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners at VPH and VUH.

Key Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with Vice President (VP) and Chief Nursing Officer (CNO), lead and inform clinical practice standards for adult patients at Vanderbilt Psychiatric Hospital. Share accountability for annual goals with VP and CNO.


  • Manage clinical effort of physicians and nurse practitioners jointly with Executive Medical Director of Ambulatory Services. Create and manage call schedule for VPH Adult Services.


  • Executive management of three clinical services via direct reports: a) Medical Director of VUH Hospital Psychiatry, b) Medical Director of Neuromodulation Services, c) Clinical Director of Psychiatric Assessment Service.


  • Lead clinical services as member of the Leadership Council of the Vanderbilt Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.


  • Lead daily (Mo-Fri) team meetings to manage admissions, discharges, census at VPH. Work with Access Center, operations team, and clinicians to ensure timely patient access to VPH.


  • Participate in activities to improve employee and clinician retention and engagement.


  • Partner with administrative and nursing leaders to implement and engage in quality and process improvement efforts (e.g., reduce harm events, reduce readmissions, participate in Serious Safety Event analyses).


  • Plan and manage growth in your service line throughout the geographic area of your responsibility.


Schedule & Workload

  • Effort allocation: 40% administrative; the remaining 60% are devoted to clinical care and, if appropriate, academic pursuits


  • Call: 5pm - 8 am weekday and 24-hour weekend paid home call only, shared with all adult psychiatrists


  • Average patient load when on inpatient service: Approximately 10 patients per day


Qualifications

  • MD or DO degree, board certified in either general, addiction, or geriatric psychiatry


  • Tennessee medical licensure (or eligibility)


  • Minimum of 5 years inpatient psychiatry experience


  • Strong commitment to clinical excellence and teamwork


  • Leadership in academic medical center is desired
