This opportunity is in the Insurance Underwriting department

The Insurance Underwriting Department offers a culture of empowerment to produce results and resolve clients' issues. Our team has an excellent track record of success with an experienced and creative group of people that work well together while underwriting various lines of coverage for large accounts representing numerous industries.

Role Description:

As an Excess Workers' Compensation, Senior Underwriter, you will play a key role in underwriting, servicing, and driving the profitability of a book of business within your assigned territory. You will evaluate new and renewal excess workers' compensation opportunities, analyze complex risk and loss information, establish appropriate program structures and pricing, and negotiate coverage, premium, terms, and conditions with brokers within your underwriting authority.

In this highly visible role, you will build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and insureds while serving as a local representative of Safety National. You will have the opportunity to meet directly with clients and risk management professionals, evaluate operations and exposures, develop a pipeline of new opportunities, and communicate the value of Safety National's coverage and services. You will use claim data, loss trends, actuarial information, state workers' compensation benefits, financial information, and other underwriting resources to make informed decisions and develop solutions that appropriately balance risk and opportunity.

You will collaborate across Underwriting, Business Development, Claims, Loss Prevention, Legal, Actuarial, and other internal teams to support new and renewal business. You will also participate in producer and client meetings, stewardship discussions, industry conferences, and strategic initiatives while sharing your knowledge with less-experienced underwriting professionals. Success in this position requires strong analytical and organizational skills, excellent written and verbal communication, sound underwriting judgment, and the ability to independently manage multiple priorities while maintaining Safety National's underwriting standards. The role also requires a willingness to spend approximately 40% of your time outside the office soliciting new business, developing relationships, and supporting renewal business.

Qualifications:

Education:

A Bachelor's Degree is required, or sufficient on-the-job experience in underwriting. A degree in business administration with a major in insurance, accounting, finance, marketing, or a related field is preferred.

Required Qualifications:
  • 3 or more years of experience underwriting large workers' compensation accounts.
  • Experience underwriting large excess workers' compensation and group/association accounts.
  • Regional/local market knowledge of brokers and accounts.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with a strong background in marketing.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and efficiency skills.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize responsibilities to meet multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently while adhering to company underwriting guidelines.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.
  • Willingness to spend approximately 40% of time outside the office soliciting new business, building relationships, and maintaining renewal business.
  • Must be presently authorized to work in the U.S. without a requirement for work authorization sponsorship by our company for this position now or in the future
  • This position allows for a hybrid work schedule which includes a minimum of 3 days per week in our Chicago, IL office , located at 311 S. Wacker Dr. Suite 6350 Chicago, IL. Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in business administration with a major in insurance, accounting, finance, marketing, or a related field.
  • CPCU or other relevant professional designation.

In our vision to be First with Co-Workers, compensation is only one piece of the comprehensive total rewards package we offer. The target base salary range for this position is $101,500 to $131,000. Compensation for the successful candidate will consider the candidate's particular combination of knowledge, skills, competencies, experience and geographic location.
