Job DescriptionKey Responsibilities Multi-Site EHS Leadership
- Lead EHS strategy, priorities, and performance across multiple sites within the Great Lakes Region.
- Provide visible leadership, technical direction, coaching, and support to site leaders, EHS professionals, supervisors, and employees.
- Establish consistent regional expectations while adapting programs and controls to site-specific operations and risks.
- Partner with operational leaders to integrate EHS requirements into business planning, daily management, capital projects, and change management.
- Drive accountability for hazard control, corrective action closure, and sustained EHS performance at all levels of the organization.
Regulatory Compliance and Environmental Management
- Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local environmental, occupational health, and safety requirements, as well as company standards.
- Lead or support regulatory inspections, permit activities, compliance evaluations, recordkeeping, and required reporting.
- Oversee environmental programs that may include air emissions, wastewater and stormwater, hazardous materials, hazardous and non-hazardous waste, spill prevention, and emergency planning.
- Maintain effective compliance assurance processes and escalate significant risks or gaps to regional and business leadership.
Risk Management and Serious Injury Prevention
- Assess operational risks and implement effective controls using the hierarchy of controls.
- Lead regional initiatives addressing serious injury and fatality exposures, including electrical safety, hazardous energy control/LOTO, machine guarding, mobile equipment, work at height, and contractor activities.
- Conduct and support risk assessments, audits, inspections, and field observations to verify program effectiveness.
- Participate in design reviews, equipment installations, process changes, and new-site or acquisition integration as applicable.
Incident Management and Corrective Action
- Lead and coach effective investigations of injuries, illnesses, environmental events, near misses, and high-potential incidents.
- Ensure investigations identify underlying causes and result in sustainable corrective and preventive actions.
- Monitor action plans, verify effectiveness, communicate lessons learned, and share improvements across the regional network.
- Support emergency preparedness, response planning, drills, and business continuity activities.
Performance Management and Continuous Improvement
- Establish, analyze, and communicate leading and lagging EHS metrics across the region.
- Use performance data, audit findings, and risk trends to prioritize resources and improvement initiatives.
- Develop and implement regional EHS plans, objectives, and improvement roadmaps aligned with business and enterprise priorities.
- Apply continuous improvement and Human and Organizational Performance principles, where appropriate, to strengthen systems and reduce risk.
Training, Engagement, and Culture
- Assess training needs and ensure effective delivery of required EHS education across the region.
- Coach leaders to communicate expectations, reinforce safe behaviors, and address risk through routine operational engagement.
- Build partnerships across Operations, Engineering, Human Resources, Facilities, Quality, and other functions to achieve EHS objectives.
- Promote employee participation in hazard identification, problem solving, and continuous improvement.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field.
- Progressive EHS experience in manufacturing, distribution, industrial, or other complex operational environments, including demonstrated leadership responsibility.
- Demonstrated experience leading or supporting EHS programs across multiple sites, business units, or geographically dispersed operations.
- Strong working knowledge of applicable OSHA and EPA requirements and the ability to interpret state and local regulatory obligations across the region.
- Experience developing and implementing EHS management systems, compliance programs, risk controls, and performance improvement plans.
- Demonstrated capability in incident investigation, root cause analysis, corrective action management, auditing, and regulatory interaction.
- Effective leadership, communication, coaching, and influencing skills across frontline, technical, and senior leadership audiences.
- Ability to prioritize multiple initiatives, operate independently, and make sound risk-based decisions in a fast-paced multi-site environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and EHS data management or reporting systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional safety or environmental certification, such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), or an equivalent recognized credential.
- Experience leading direct or indirect EHS professionals across multiple locations.
- Experience with ISO 14001, ISO 45001, or comparable EHS management systems.
- Experience applying Lean, continuous improvement, or Human and Organizational Performance principles.
- Experience supporting electrical safety, hazardous energy control, machine safety, contractor safety, and environmental permitting programs.
Work Requirements
- Ability to work in manufacturing, warehouse, and other operational environments and to respond to significant EHS events when necessary.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment and conduct site inspections in operational areas.
