Job SummaryThe Enterprise Health and Safety Manager serves as Redwood's subject matter expert and strategic leader for workplace health and safety, injury and illness prevention, regulatory compliance, and operational risk reduction.
Reporting through Human Resources, this role is responsible for developing and maintaining an enterprise-wide health and safety management system while serving as a hands-on resource to operational leaders.
The role combines proactive hazard identification, occupational health and exposure prevention, operational safety assessments, injury and claims analysis, incident investigation, workplace violence prevention, emergency preparedness, regulatory readiness, and leadership coaching. The Enterprise Health and Safety Manager partners closely with Human Resources, Operations, clinical leadership, and Workers' Compensation stakeholders to establish consistent standards, identify trends, implement targeted interventions, and build a strong culture of safety and accountability.
Skills & Knowledge- Enterprise Health and Safety Strategy: Ability to develop and implement scalable health and safety programs, policies, standards, metrics, and continuous improvement initiatives across a multi-site organization.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Strong understanding of federal OSHA, applicable state OSHA requirements, EPA regulations, Workers' Compensation processes, and state and local workplace health and safety requirements.
- Occupational Health: Knowledge of communicable-disease prevention, bloodborne pathogen requirements, respiratory protection, exposure control, employee health screenings, and other occupational health requirements applicable to Redwood's operations.
- Risk and Hazard Assessment: Expertise in conducting job hazard analyses, site inspections, ergonomic assessments, and proactive workplace risk evaluations.
- Incident Investigation: Experience leading root-cause investigations using established methodologies such as the 5 Whys and Fishbone analysis and translating findings into sustainable corrective actions.
- Data and Trend Analysis: Ability to analyze injury metrics, leading and lagging indicators, loss runs, Workers' Compensation claims, and high-risk locations to identify trends and drive targeted prevention strategies.
- Workplace Violence Prevention and Emergency Preparedness: Knowledge of workplace violence prevention, threat assessment, emergency response planning, and crisis-management practices.
- Leadership and Influence: Strong communication and influence skills with the ability to coach operational leaders, establish accountability, and build adoption without relying solely on direct authority.
- Continuous Improvement: Ability to translate safety data, field observations, incident trends, and employee feedback into practical and sustainable improvements.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Enterprise Health and Safety Management System: Develop, implement, and continuously improve Redwood's enterprise-wide health and safety management system, including policies, standards, risk assessments, leading indicators, corrective-action tracking, and prevention strategies.
- Safety Culture and Leadership Accountability: Partner with operational leadership to build a proactive safety culture through coaching, education, performance metrics, accountability, and consistent reinforcement of health and safety expectations.
- Occupational Health and Exposure Prevention: Develop and maintain programs addressing communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, respiratory protection, workplace exposures, required employee health screenings, and other job-related health risks.
- Employee Health Requirements: Partner with Human Resources, Operations, and clinical leadership to establish and monitor job-related health requirements, including applicable TB screening, vaccinations, exposure follow-up, and fitness-for-duty processes.
- Hazard Identification and Ergonomic Controls: Conduct job hazard analyses, ergonomic evaluations, and workplace safety assessments. Recommend and support the implementation of effective engineering, administrative, and work-practice controls.
- Regulatory Compliance and Readiness: Maintain enterprise-wide compliance with applicable workplace health and safety requirements, oversee required recordkeeping, including OSHA 300 logs, and serve as Redwood's primary subject matter expert during regulatory inspections.
- Incident Investigation and Root-Cause Analysis: Partner directly with Administrators, District Managers, Regional leaders, and Human Resources following serious injuries, illnesses, exposures, or safety events to identify root causes, establish corrective actions, and track mitigation steps through completion.
- Exposure Response: Coordinate Redwood's workplace response to employee exposures involving bloodborne pathogens, communicable diseases, hazardous substances, or other occupational health risks, including documentation, required follow-up, and corrective action.
- Risk Analytics and Targeted Interventions: Establish and monitor enterprise health and safety metrics, including leading and lagging indicators, injury and illness trends, Workers' Compensation data, and high-risk locations. Use these insights to prioritize resources and deploy targeted interventions.
- Workplace Violence Prevention and Emergency Readiness: Lead workplace violence prevention initiatives, support site-level emergency preparedness, and establish appropriate threat assessment, response, escalation, and risk-mitigation protocols.
- Corrective-Action Management: Establish a consistent process for documenting, assigning, monitoring, escalating, and closing health- and safety-related corrective actions so identified risks are addressed promptly and effectively.
- Field Leadership Advisory and Coaching: Serve as a hands-on field resource for leaders facing unsafe situations, employee health concerns, or emerging operational risks. Provide practical coaching that enables leaders to identify concerns early and take appropriate action.
- Health and Safety Education: Partner with Learning and Development, Human Resources, clinical leadership, and Operations to identify training needs, develop relevant materials, monitor completion, and evaluate training effectiveness.
- Workers' Compensation Prevention Partnership: Partner with Human Resources and Workers' Compensation stakeholders to analyze claims trends, identify recurring causes of injuries and illnesses, and develop prevention strategies designed to reduce frequency, severity, and overall claim costs.
- Executive Reporting and Continuous Improvement: Provide regular reporting to executive leadership on health and safety performance, emerging risks, regulatory matters, corrective actions, Workers' Compensation trends, and opportunities for improvement.
Qualifications- Education: Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, Risk Management, or a related field required. Equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
- Experience: At least five years of progressive experience in occupational health, workplace safety, or risk prevention, including demonstrated success developing programs and conducting field assessments, ergonomic evaluations, incident investigations, exposure response, and trend analysis across multi-site operations.
- Industry Experience: Experience in healthcare, human services, residential care, or another distributed service environment is strongly preferred.
- Certifications: Certified Safety Professional, Associate Safety Professional, Associate in Risk Management, Certified Occupational Health Nurse, or a related professional certification is preferred. OSHA 30-Hour certification is required within six months of hire.
- Technical Skills: Demonstrated expertise in occupational health and safety programs, exposure-control practices, bloodborne pathogen requirements, communicable-disease prevention, root-cause investigations, job hazard analyses, ergonomic assessments, regulatory compliance, safety metrics, and corrective-action management.
- Analytical Skills: Ability to interpret Workers' Compensation data, injury and illness trends, loss runs, and operational metrics and translate findings into practical prevention strategies.
- Leadership: Demonstrated ability to influence, coach, and establish accountability across functions and levels of an organization without relying solely on direct authority.
- Travel: Ability to travel regularly to Redwood locations and respond to serious incidents or emerging health and safety concerns as needed.
