Full Job Description
The City of Edmonton is looking for an Engineering Technologist II to join the Transportation Planning and Design section within the Infrastructure Planning & Design Branch. In this role, you will support the entire roadway design process from Concept to As-Built drawings for transportation projects, ranging from active transportation, major collectors, and arterials with scopes from paving to full reconstruction.
You will collaborate closely with supervising engineers, multidisciplinary teams, and community partners to review project scopes, conduct field reviews, and prepare engineering drawings. By incorporating current Local, Provincial, and Federal standards, you will ensure designs address construction costs, infrastructure conditions, and long-term lifecycle considerations. What will you do?
Review project scopes and objectives with supervising engineers and coordinate with other branches, departments, and consultants
Conduct site inspections to evaluate infrastructure conditions and verify utility alignments
Provide technical design and drafting support to the Transportation Planning & Design section of the Infrastructure Planning & Design Branch
Prepare concept, preliminary (development), tender, and final contract plans based on current Local, Provincial, and Federal roadway design standards for various transportation and civil infrastructure projects including: widening, rehabilitation/reconstruction, streetscape, active mode, transit improvements, and safety improvements
Determine topographic survey needs, request field surveys, and interpret survey and utility information
Ensure design meets existing and future requirements of the branch
Ensure designs consider construction cost, infrastructure condition, and future life-cycle considerations
Coordinate other design elements including streetlight, traffic signal, landscaping, and structural designs
Prepare drainage design for improvements and relocations
Perform calculations and designs for horizontal and vertical roadway element alignments
Complete quantity takeoffs and assist with cost estimates at all stages of a project
Review plan submissions (internal circulations or consultant) for conformance to approved standards and/or concepts
Maintain contact with survey and construction field personnel throughout a project's construction phase and provide additional information or assist in design changes when field conflicts arise
Guide and offer technical direction to support staff using AutoCAD and Civil3D software
Evaluate utility circulation plans for compliance with established standards and to prevent potential design conflicts
Promote a safe, healthy workplace by adhering to all Occupational Health and Safety guidelines
Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications:

Minimum 5 years of related working experience with preferably progressively increasing responsibility
Must be eligible to be recognized as a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) with ASET
Assets:
Demonstrated abilities with AutoCAD/ Civil3D, computer aided drafting software, and plan plotting set-up
Experience utilizing Google Workspace apps
Skills required for success:
Develop design solutions using current software for simple to medium complexity rehabilitation projects, and at minimum provide options for solutions of complex design problems
Knowledge of design standards, an understanding of designing in constrained situations and of the field design process, as well as an ability to develop design options and analyze benefits and impacts for discussion of the final solution with the engineer or supervisor
Considerable knowledge of applicable bylaws, standards and regulations pertaining to work
Considerable knowledge of the engineering terminology and techniques related to the work assigned
Ability to read, interpret and design advanced plans, specifications, and diagrams of a complex technical nature
Construction/field experience including survey layout and interpretation would be an asset
Ability to apply current computer software to a wide variety of applications including the design, modelling, and AutoTurn software
Work under tight timelines, and must be able to prioritize time effectively with input on work priorities from the engineer or supervisor
Physical ability to perform work outside in all types of weather and areas related to the work assignments

Work Environment:
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance

Hours of Work: 33.75 Hours per week, Monday to Friday
