Description & Requirements

Bloomberg Connects is a rapidly growing, free platform that helps museums, galleries, and cultural spaces make their institutions, stories and dynamic content more engaging to audiences around the world. Launched in 2019, Connects features multimedia guides with unique content exclusive to each of our over 1,500 cultural institution partners across 33 countries.

As part of Bloomberg's culture of giving back, Connects is a joint effort between Bloomberg and Bloomberg Philanthropies in support of their work to ensure better, longer lives for the greatest number of people by focusing on five key areas: the arts, education, the environment, government innovation, and public health.

We believe that technology opens doors, and we created Connects as a part of our mission to make art and culture accessible to all-in-person, at-home, and anywhere.

We are a team of designers, researchers, marketers, editors, engineers, and leaders working together to enhance our partner's capacity to reach audiences around the world and improve their visitor experience. Built through empathy and research, qualitative and quantitative data, and experimentation and iteration, our products seek to delight and empower.

What's in it for you?

Lead a team that matters: The Visitor Experience team owns the mobile and web applications that millions of visitors use to discover, navigate, and connect with cultural institutions.

Run the team day to day: Hold clear expectations, raise the engineering bar, and coordinate delivery with Product for a team of four senior engineers.

Lead as an engineer: This is a player-coach role - you keep building, reviewing, and making technical calls alongside the team, not a management track that pulls you out of the work.

Drive an organizational shift: We're transforming this organization into an agentic engineering organization - one where engineers spend more of their judgment on systems understanding and architecture, and AI takes on more of the code production itself.

Partner directly with leadership: Work with the Head of Product and Engineering to drive that shift on your team, and hold the team to the standard it requires.

We'll trust you to:
  • Own delivery and engineering standards for the Visitor Experience team - four senior engineers across our React Native mobile app and web
  • Hold clear expectations and a rising bar for engineering quality across the team
  • Partner with the Visitor Experience PM as a peer: assess feasibility, advocate for the engineering work required to hit outcomes, and push back where quality or delivery risk demands it
  • Partner with the Head of Product and Engineering to drive the team's shift to agentic engineering practices, and lead the team through that change - setting expectations, addressing resistance, and coaching engineers into new ways of working
  • Push the team toward systems understanding and architecture as the primary craft, as AI increasingly handles code production
  • Stay hands-on enough to review critical technical decisions and unblock the team, without defaulting to doing the coding yourself
  • Represent the team's technical work and constraints to stakeholders outside the team

You'll need to have:
  • 10+ years of hands-on software engineering experience, including production mobile and/or web applications
  • 5+ years leading or managing engineers, ideally in a player-coach capacity

• A Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics or equivalent work experience

We'd love to see:
  • Experience leading teams responsible for user-facing software - the release cadence, quality bar, and cross-platform tradeoffs that come with shipping directly to end users, not just internal or backend systems
  • Experience managing meaningful change in how an engineering team works - not just running a team, but shifting how one operates
  • A track record of setting technical direction and holding a team accountable to it - not just executing your own workstream
  • Real, current experience using AI tools in your own engineering work, and conviction about where agentic engineering is heading - you should want this shift, not tolerate it
  • Experience partnering directly with Product on scope, feasibility, and sequencing
  • Strong communication skills - you'll be the one translating between engineering reality and product/business expectations
  • Experience with React Native and modern web (React/TypeScript); comfort dropping into native Swift/Kotlin modules when a RN project calls for it
  • Experience developing agentic tooling and/or harness engineering - building or shaping the systems and guardrails that let AI agents do real engineering work
  • Experience standing up or improving engineering practices - architecture review, technical planning, delivery cadence - on a team that lacked them
  • Experience in a small, fast-moving product organization

Salary Range = 200,000 - 300,000 USD Annual + Benefits + Bonus
