The Mid-Level Power Engineer supports the planning, design, and delivery of high-voltage (HV) air-insulated substations (AIS) and transmission line (T-Line) projects ranging from 69 kV to 500 kV. This role performs detailed electrical engineering, calculations, physical/structural coordination, protection & controls design support, and prepares engineering deliverables through the full project lifecycle-conceptual design, 30/60/90% design, IFA/IFC packages, procurement, and construction support. The engineer works in a multi-discipline environment (civil, structural, SCADA, protection, relay settings, and project management) and ensures designs comply with NESC, IEEE, NFPA 850, NEC, NERC/WECC, and utility-specific standards. Responsibilities include preparing equipment specifications, reviewing vendor drawings, grounding studies, conductor sizing, clearance checks, PLS-CADD/PLS-Pole coordination, and supporting field engineers during energization, FAT/SAT, and commissioning.
Qualifications & Requirements
• B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering (Power emphasis preferred).
• EIT required; PE licensure or ability to obtain within 6-12 months strongly preferred.
• 8-15 years of experience in substation or transmission line engineering
• Experience preparing 30%/60%/90% design packages, IFC drawings, and construction support RFI responses.
• Experience reviewing vendor submittals (breakers, transformers, CVTs/PTs/CTs, bus supports, arresters, insulators).
• Experience coordinating with civil and structural teams on foundations, steel, cable trenching, grading, and access roads.
• Experience participating in FAT, SAT, commissioning, energization support, and field issue resolution.
Software Proficiency
• AutoCAD / MicroStation
• PLS-CADD / PLS-Pole
• ETAP / ASPEN / SKM (for grounding/short circuit)
• Microsoft Excel (advanced), Word, PowerPoint
Soft Skills & Project Execution
• Strong understanding of engineering workflow, QA/QC processes, and change-management.
• Ability to manage deadlines and prioritize multiple deliverables.
• Strong communication skills for interaction with clients, EPC contractors, manufacturers, and internal engineering disciplines.
• Ability to prepare calculation packages, basis-of-design documents, and technical reports.
• Able to work independently while mentoring junior engineers or designers.
