Primary Responsibilities

HDR is currently seeking an Electrical Business Class Lead to lead a team of engineers and designers with experience in complex architectural and engineering projects across several market sectors such as Healthcare, Technology, Education, Science, Water Treatment, and Power. The position is in our growing Building Engineering Services design center in Houston, TX, also aligned with established regional design centers in San Antonio and Dallas, TX. The Building Engineering Services design center is a full service, multi-disciplinary team including mechanical, electrical, structural and civil engineers that is co-located with our Architecture and other practice groups to support a collaborative and fully integrated design process.

The primary duties of the Electrical Business Class Lead are to provide the overall leadership to the team, identify growth opportunities through mentoring and training, coordinate the design work of electrical engineers and designers working within a multi-disciplined, full service, A/E team throughout the entire project development, and create a collaborative and motivating team culture to promote design excellence across the practice. The responsibilities will also include being involved with supporting marketing and project pursuits, workplan development, quality control, recruiting, and team development. The individual must be highly motivated and will be the electrical lead on multiple multi-disciplinary projects and may be called to manage projects that have a predominantly engineering focus.

In the role of Electrical Business Class Lead, we'll count on you to:

  • Establish client relations and be involved with marketing and client development activities.
  • Manage the technical and operational activities of the electrical discipline.
  • Prepare/review project budgets and scopes for the electrical discipline and track budget status.
  • Schedule and coordinate all work performed inside the discipline.
  • Establish work priorities and project assignments for staff.
  • Monitor scope of work and scope changes.
  • Facilitate and encourage coordination with other discipline groups.
  • Conduct interviews in support of the hiring of new staff for the section and provide new employee mentoring.
  • Establish employee goals and conduct employee performance reviews.
  • Schedule and conduct section meetings to discuss productivity, workload and quality control issues.
  • Advance the skill level of personnel through training, education, experience and similar engagement.
  • Coordinate with the electrical discipline managers of other business group locations to review workload, project status, and staffing requirements.
  • Prepare/review electrical engineering scope of work and budgets/estimates for proposals.
  • Monitor changes in codes, regulations and client standards and keep staff up to date on current industry practices.
  • Implement any required changes into the electrical design standards, procedures, and deliverables.
  • Perform and participate in quality control reviews.
  • Serve as a project manager occasionally and/or task lead when applicable.
  • Perform project engineer duties when required.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Preference given to local candidates.
  • Experience and interest in sustainable design including credentials in high performance building design similar to LEED
  • Experience in design calculations, specifications, and preparation of construction drawings for corporate/commercial development, industrial, federal or mission critical projects
