Overview

The Director, Underwriting oversees activities within the underwriting department, provides management for staff that consists of Managers, Supervisors, Underwriters, and Underwriting Assistants who are responsible for underwriting, review, and placement of risk with AmTrust. Holds overall responsibility for managing their assigned book of business within company profitability guidelines. Maintains a solid understanding of AmTrust’s mission, vision, and values. Upholds the standards of the AmTrust organization. 

Responsibilities
  • Accountable for achieving core operating income, real growth objectives and maintaining quality of business.
  • Provides mentoring to their team of underwriters and guidance for their professional development
  • Ensures that team adheres with company guidelines and standards in regard to risk acceptability
  • Manages the selection and denial of new and/or renewal business including management of pricing targets, renewal retention targets and profitability targets.
  • Ensures that underwriting decisions are monitored through regular audits and address issues as appropriate individually or through group training.
  • Focuses on producer relations including the management of their book of business by developing and implementing action plans as deemed appropriate.
  • Manages and monitors all stages of underwriting execution.
  • Creates and distributes management reports detailing various functions and status on a monthly basis.
  • Travel as needed to perform agency visits or to attend company and industry meetings
  • Keeps current with market trends and demands.
  • Performs other functionally related duties as assigned.
  • Due to the nature of this role, travel, including overnight travel, is required.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 9+ years of experience successfully leading and supervising staff
  • Demonstrated effective management and leadership skills
  • Thorough knowledge of property/casualty underwriting procedures and policies
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, plan and work well with others
  • Extensive knowledge of NCCI, ISO, and State regulations relating to insurance
  • Strong understanding of underwriting best practices and ability to apply same
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and interpretive skills
  • Ability to effectively multi-task and work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • Ability to collaborate, “think outside the box” and make sound decisions to resolve complex matters
  • Ability to travel and work outside normal business hours

Preferred: 

  • Insurance industry designations
  • Continuing education

The expected salary range for this role is $114,700 - $195,000 annually.
