Full Job Description
We are looking for a Director of Software Engineering to lead the engineering teams in our Security and Alarm portfolio at Bold Group. Bold Group, an EverCommerce solution, serves the electronic security industry with the most comprehensive array of alarm monitoring and integrated financial management solutions tailored to achieve optimal business performance. These leading alarm monitoring systems are complemented by the industry's top accounting and business management systems.
About the Role
The Director of Software Engineering owns the strategy, people, and delivery health of multiple engineering teams in the Security and Alarm portfolio. You will build and develop a bench of engineering managers, set engineering priorities with product, architecture, and business leaders, and hold your organization accountable for sustained delivery, team health, and technical quality at scale.
This is a high-impact leadership role at the intersection of business strategy and engineering execution. You will translate company goals into engineering priorities, represent engineering in senior cross-functional forums, and make sure your teams can deliver reliably and keep getting better. You will also guide the modernization of long-lived platforms so that our products stay dependable for the customers who rely on them around the clock.
Key Responsibilities
People and Organizational Leadership
• Lead, coach, and hold Engineering Managers accountable for the outcomes of their teams.
• Build a management bench and a succession pipeline by identifying high-potential engineers and managers and building development plans for them.
• Hire and retain key engineering talent at the manager and senior individual contributor level.
• Address senior performance issues with clarity and care, and act early before they become crises.
• Build a culture of psychological safety, accountability, and engineering excellence.
Delivery and Operational Excellence
• Own delivery health across multiple teams and sprints, and identify systemic delivery risks before they become incidents.
• Hold teams to their commitments without micromanaging execution.
• Define and track engineering health metrics across the organization, including delivery consistency, quality, and team engagement.
• Drive process improvement at the organizational level and remove structural, process, and personnel impediments that limit delivery.
• Own capacity planning, budget, and headcount forecasting for the engineering organization.
Scrum and Agile at Scale
• Be accountable for the health of Scrum practices across every team in your organization.
• Identify and correct ceremony dysfunction, and coach managers on effective team facilitation and delivery habits.
• Use delivery metrics to drive improvement across teams.
Technical Leadership and Modernization
• Partner with Architects and Staff Engineers to maintain architectural coherence and technical quality at scale.
• Own the technical debt and modernization posture of the organization, including build, buy, and modernize decisions at the portfolio level.
• Bring enough technical depth to assess architecture and quality trade-offs and to challenge them when needed.
Strategy and Communication
• Translate business strategy into engineering priorities and a clear roadmap in partnership with Product.
• Communicate engineering status and strategy to executive audiences with credibility.
• Build alignment across engineering, product, and business leadership, and influence decisions beyond your direct authority.
• Represent engineering in budget, headcount, and planning discussions.
About You
You are a leader who understands that great engineering unlocks business growth. You combine the people skills to build strong managers with the technical judgment to keep a complex, long-lived product portfolio healthy, and you stay calm and clear when customers depend on your systems.
Requirements
• 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 5+ years leading engineering managers or multiple teams.
• Proven record of owning delivery, quality, and team health across multiple Scrum teams.
• Experience hiring, developing, and retaining engineering managers and senior engineers.
• Experience building and executing a technology modernization or platform migration strategy for established products.
• Working knowledge of C#, .NET, and Microsoft SQL Server sufficient to assess architecture, quality, and performance trade-offs.
• Strong executive communication skills and the ability to build alignment across engineering, product, and business leaders.
• Experience managing engineering budgets, headcount, and capacity planning.
Preferred Qualifications
• B.S. degree in a technical discipline or equivalent experience.
• Experience with enterprise software for the alarm monitoring, security, or other mission-critical industries.
• Experience with legacy-to-modern platform transitions, such as moving Visual Basic or other older codebases to .NET.
• Experience leading distributed teams across time zones and including contract partners.
• Experience applying AI-assisted development tools to improve engineering throughput.
