Full Job Description
Our Finance group is currently looking to add a Director, Project Accounting, to our growing team, based in Edmonton, AB

Reporting to the CFO, we are seeking an experienced accounting leader who has knowledge and experience in project and divisional accounting within large-scale construction operations. This position owns divisional P&L accuracy and project accounting for each of Valard's business lines and is responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance with regulatory requirements, and effective financial management. It will lead a team of accounting professionals, implement best practices, and support strategic financial planning to drive financial performance.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Oversee all project and divisional accounting functions, ensuring accurate financial reporting and regulatory compliance
  • Lead the month-end, quarter-end and year-end closing processes
  • Own divisional P&L accuracy and project accounting for each business line, including job structure set-up, cost control, work-in-progress review, revenue recognition and cost-to-complete forecasting
  • Standardize project accounting practices across all business units and hold Business Unit Controllers accountable to consistent standards
  • Set quality standards for percentage-of-completion accounting and approve significant estimate-at-completion adjustments
  • Lead the annual budgeting process and maintain financial forecasts and models
  • Own SOX control accountability
  • Directly manage and develop Business Unit Controllers
  • Maintain robust internal controls and mitigate financial risk across the divisions
  • Act as a key financial advisor to divisional leadership and senior management

Requirements
  • Post-Secondary Education in Accounting, Finance or a related field
  • CPA designation required
  • 10 years of progressive accounting experience, including 5+ years in a leadership role
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP / IFRS and construction revenue recognition principles
  • Demonstrated expertise with Job Costing Management, Project Analytics and WIP Reporting
  • Proficiency in financial management and ERP systems (JD Edwards or SAP preferred) and advanced Excel skills
  • Experience standardizing accounting practices across multiple business units

Preferred Skills / Qualifications
  • Experience in the utility or construction industry
  • Advanced degree such as an MBA
