Position SummaryThe Director of Veterinary Junior Surgical Education provides leadership for the planning, coordination, and delivery of the third-year junior surgery curriculum. Working collaboratively with faculty, veterinary nurses, staff, and external partners, this individual will oversee all aspects of the junior surgical program, ensuring students develop essential surgical competencies through hands-on learning experiences.
The successful candidate will be responsible for curriculum development, instructional excellence, operational coordination, external partnerships, and oversight of patient care associated with junior surgery laboratories. This role is ideal for an educator who enjoys developing innovative learning experiences while fostering student confidence, professionalism, and technical proficiency.
Key ResponsibilitiesCurriculum Leadership- Coordinate and oversee the third-year surgical skills and surgery curriculum.
- Ensure learning objectives align with institutional competencies and accreditation standards.
- Develop, evaluate, and continuously improve instructional materials, laboratory exercises, and student assessments.
- Collaborate with faculty across disciplines to integrate surgical principles throughout the curriculum.
- Monitor student performance and identify opportunities to enhance learning outcomes.
Surgical Program Management- Coordinate scheduling, staffing, and resource allocation for junior surgery curriculum.
- Work closely with faculty, veterinary nurses, and support staff to ensure efficient course delivery.
- Assist in developing standard operating procedures and educational protocols that support consistency and quality.
- Maintain appropriate equipment, supplies, and instructional resources required for laboratory and surgical training.
External Partnership Coordination- Serve as the primary liaison with external organizations and clinical partners that provide student surgical opportunities for junior surgery labs.
- Develop and maintain collaborative agreements with external partners to ensure student learning experiences are met.
- Ensure junior surgery curriculum meets educational objectives, animal welfare standards, and institutional expectations.
Biosecurity and Patient Care Oversight- Develop and implement biosecurity protocols for all junior surgical activities.
- Ensure compliance with institutional policies, animal welfare standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Establish processes for patient intake, perioperative care, and postoperative follow-up for junior surgery patients.
- Monitor surgical outcomes and assist in quality improvement initiatives related to student junior surgical training.
- Collaborate with partner organizations to ensure appropriate case management and continuity of care.
Teaching and Mentorship- Provide instruction in surgical principles, aseptic technique, perioperative patient management, and clinical decision-making within the junior surgery curriculum.
- Mentor students in the development of technical surgical skills and professional competencies.
- Support faculty development and instructional consistency within the surgical curriculum.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
Required Qualifications- DVM (or equivalent veterinary degree).
- Eligibility for veterinary licensure in the State of New Jersey.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and external partners.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience in small animal surgery, surgical instruction, or clinical skills education.
- Board certification or advanced training in surgery or a related discipline.
- Experience with veterinary curriculum development or educational program leadership.
- Knowledge of veterinary biosecurity and perioperative patient management.
- Experience establishing and maintaining partnerships with external veterinary organizations.
- Demonstrated commitment to educational innovation, mentorship, and student success.
Salary and BenefitsIn accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Act, the anticipated salary range for this position is
$120,000-$175,000 annually, commensurate with qualifications, experience, clinical expertise, academic rank, and appointment track. Final salary will be determined at the time of offer.

open-rank faculty appointment (Instructor through Full Professor) available on either the
Clinical Track or
Tenure Track, depending on qualifications, experience, and professional goals. Faculty rank and appointment track will be determined at the time of appointment.
