Job Summary Reporting to AVP for Human Resources, the Director of People Analytics and Insights leads the development of comprehensive people analytics function for Human Resources and University Personnel. This role is responsible for transforming complex workforce data into actionable insights that inform strategy, enhance organizational effectiveness, and support institutional goals.
The Director of People Analytics and Insights will combine strong analytical and technical expertise with a collaborative, consultative approach to build scalable data solutions, including reporting infrastructure, data models, and analytics tools. This position plays a key role in strengthening HR data governance, improving data quality and accessibility, and advancing predictive and diagnostic analytics capabilities.
Working closely with HR leadership, HRIS, and Information Technology Services, the Director of People Analytics and Insights will drive innovation in how workforce data is collected, structured, analyzed, and communicated-fostering a culture of evidence-based decision making and continuous improvement across the university.
Department Summary The Human Resources (HR) department at Cal Poly leads workplace strategies that enable employees to thrive in their roles. Through traditional practices like recruitment, payroll, benefits, employee relations, information systems and performance management to strategic practices like professional development, organization development, workforce planning, and engagement. Human Resources is dedicated to cultivating the excellence of our approximately 6,000 employees.
Key Qualifications- Demonstrated ability to translate complex workforce data into clear, compelling narratives and visualizations tailored to diverse audiences, including executive leadership, to drive evidence-based decision making.
- Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, with demonstrated ability to identify workforce trends, diagnose root causes, and surface actionable opportunities for organizational improvement.
- Knowledge of applied statistical methods (e.g., correlation, regression, T-tests) and their appropriate use in workforce analytics and predictive modeling contexts.
- Advanced proficiency in SQL, including writing, optimizing, and maintaining complex queries, scripts, and stored procedures across large, multi-source datasets.
- Proficiency in designing, building, and maintaining relational databases, including schema design, data structures, and indexing to support scalable, high-performance analytics solutions.
Education and Experience - Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Human Resources, Data Analytics, Computer Science or related field and six years of data analytics, data management or reporting work experience. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Salary and Benefits The anticipated hiring range for this role is $130,000 - $165,000. Note that the offer is calculated based on the background and relevant years of experience of the individual selected.
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Anticipated Hiring Range referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Classification Range may be broader than what the University anticipates paying for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
