Description

The Director of Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) provides leadership and oversight of Hampton University's environmental health, occupational safety, fire/life safety, and regulatory compliance programs. Reporting directly to the Chief of Police, the Director works across the University to identify hazards, reduce risk, maintain regulatory compliance, and support campus safety and emergency preparedness.

The Director collaborates with University Police, Facilities Management, Residence Life, academic departments, Human Resources, Risk Management, Student Affairs, and other University stakeholders.

Examples of Duties
• Develop and maintain University environmental health and safety programs consistent with applicable federal, state, and local requirements.
• Conduct workplace, environmental, fire/life-safety, and facility inspections; identify hazards and coordinate corrective actions.
• Provide guidance regarding hazardous materials, chemical safety, workplace safety, and environmental concerns.
• Support emergency planning, drills, evacuations, hazardous-material response, and Emergency Operations Center activities.
• Investigate workplace accidents, safety complaints, environmental incidents, and other EHS-related occurrences.
• Develop and coordinate required safety training and awareness programs for University employees and departments.
• Develop and recommend EHS policies, procedures, standards, and risk-reduction measures.
• Maintain required EHS records and prepare reports and recommendations for the Chief of Police and University leadership.
• Serve as a liaison with fire departments, emergency services, regulatory agencies, and other external partners.

Typical Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health, Occupational Safety, Fire Science, Emergency Management, Public Safety, or a related field; equivalent education and relevant professional experience may be considered.
• Professional experience in environmental health and safety, fire service, occupational safety, emergency management, regulatory compliance, or a related field.
• Experience conducting inspections, investigations, risk assessments, or safety reviews.
• Demonstrated leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Supplemental Information
• Working knowledge of environmental health, occupational safety, fire/life safety, emergency preparedness, and applicable OSHA/VOSH requirements.
• Ability to identify hazards, recommend corrective measures, and work effectively across University departments and with emergency responders and regulatory agencies.
• Relevant professional certifications in fire safety, occupational safety, environmental health, hazardous materials, or emergency management are preferred.
• Valid driver's license and ability to respond to significant campus emergencies outside normal business hours when necessary.
