Full Job Description
InterSystems is seeking a strategic and technically hands-on Director of Development to lead innovation and execution for the Data Models engineering team, as well as core platform architecture initiatives across the broader engineering team. This leader will be responsible for driving meaningful product and engineering improvements that directly impact customer value, platform scalability, and the long-term evolution of the IRIS data platform.

The Data Models team is responsible for the core multi-model data management architecture of IRIS. This includes the definition and design of persistent data structures, planning and execution in the SQL query engine, and scalability to petabyte-scale data volume and kilo-core distributed compute. Recent major efforts include vector embedding and query support with advanced ANN index structures, dynamic micro-partitioning, and unified row/columnar planning.

The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise in distributed systems, databases, and software architecture with exceptional leadership, organizational influence, and operational discipline. This role requires someone who can identify high-value opportunities, align teams around execution, and implement sustainable processes that improve engineering quality, velocity, and cross-functional collaboration.

Responsibilities

Strategic Product & Engineering Leadership
  • Identify and drive high-impact technical and organizational improvements that materially advance the Data Models organization and IRIS platform capabilities.
  • Lead initiatives from concept through operationalization, including implementation, adoption, measurement of impact, and long-term ownership delegation.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of the end-to-end platform architecture and guide long-term architectural decisions that support scalability, flexibility, and maintainability.

Technical Excellence & Architecture
  • Drive architectural modernization efforts that improve system performance, scalability, concurrency, and operational flexibility.
  • Champion engineering best practices, technical rigor, and sustainable software design across the organization.
  • Evaluate and integrate emerging technologies, including AI-driven development workflows and agentic coding approaches, while preserving engineering quality and architectural integrity.

Team Leadership & Organizational Development
  • Establish and enforce high standards for technical quality, execution, communication, and professionalism.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous learning, experimentation, and evidence-based decision making.
  • Mentor and develop engineering leaders and individual contributors to support long-term career growth and organizational capability building.
  • Create operational leverage through effective delegation, process documentation, and ownership distribution.

Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Build strong partnerships across engineering, product management, infrastructure, and platform teams to deliver initiatives that span organizational boundaries.
  • Drive alignment on shared priorities and promote collaborative execution models that enable enterprise-scale product development.
  • Advocate for and communicate the value of cross-team contributions and organizational partnerships.

Required Qualifications
  • 15+ years of software engineering experience with significant experience leading large-scale platform or infrastructure teams
  • Strong background in database systems, distributed systems, storage engines, query optimization, or platform architecture
  • Experience leading architectural modernization and large technical transformation initiatives
  • Demonstrated ability to balance strategic leadership with deep technical engagement
  • Proven success building high-performing engineering cultures focused on accountability, quality, and continuous improvement
  • Strong communication and organizational leadership skills
  • College degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, or similar

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with cloud-native systems, scalability models, and modern software delivery practices preferred
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted software development workflows and automation frameworks is highly desirable
