Overview

AtkinsRéalis is looking to hire an experienced labour and employment lawyer interested in supporting its dynamic Nuclear team in Canada. We offer the opportunity for a business-minded subject matter expert to partner with the Human Resources team (Labour & Employee Relations) on a multitude of exciting projects and active matters.

The successful candidate will be responsible for compliance and daily management of labour and employment related issues. They will advise the business and HR on policy development; provide strategic legal advice on a broad range of labour & employee relations initiatives; and provide training to stakeholders. They will be the point of contact and business partner to HR.

Your role

As a member of the Legal Team, you will report to the Senior Vice-President & General Counsel, Global Nuclear and be responsible to:
  • Provide dedicated legal advice and support to the Candu Energy Human Resources and Labour Relations teams on various aspects of the employee lifecycle, including hiring, performance management, employee relations, compensation, progressive discipline and termination and ensuring compliance with various employment legislation.
  • Maintain focus on changes in the Canada Labour Code, and related jurisprudence, which may require amendments to policies and procedures in the workplace, along with a strategic mindset to determine how best to implement such changes while accounting for any and all mitigation strategies.
  • Provide interpretative support, training and guidance to internal stakeholders on legislative, initiatives and changes.
  • Provide support during the collective bargaining process.
  • Liaise with broader corporate legal team.
  • Interpret and advise internal clients on laws and regulations pertaining to employment and labour, including but not limited to health and safety, and pay equity.
  • Provide support in arbitration (hearings, proceedings, etc.), mediation; occasionally advocate before labour tribunals, Courts and arbitrators.
  • Review, revise and draft internal processes, policies, procedures and templates.
  • Collaborate and manage external law firms, where support is required.


About you

  • Member of Law Society of Ontario in good standing.
  • At least 7 years of relevant experience in the field of labour and employment law, with a strong Labour experience.
  • Experienced in federal jurisdiction (i.e. Canada Labour Code).
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of federal employment and labour laws and regulations to provide sound legal advice and representation.
  • Client service skills to understand and address client needs, maintain client relationships and ensure client satisfaction. Be a partner to the business.
  • Adherence to integrity and ethics in handling of sensitive and confidential information while adhering to legal standards and law.
  • Research skills to gather and analyze relevant case studies, legal precedents, and labour regulations for effective case handling.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines while managing multiple cases simultaneously.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary, fast-paced work environment.
  • Methodic, flexible and dynamic.
  • Must be able to acquire and maintain federal government security clearance.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills.
  • Fluent in English (spoken and written).
