Position Summary

The Director of Global Retirement within the Benefits COE (Center of Excellence) is responsible for the strategic direction, governance, and oversight of all retirement and pension plans operating outside of the United States and Puerto Rico. This role serves as the primary subject matter expert and decision-maker for BMS's international retirement portfolio, ensuring that all plans remain compliant with applicable local laws and regulations, aligned with global People strategy, and optimized to deliver competitive, sustainable benefits to BMS colleagues around the world.

The Director will bring a forward-thinking, strategic mindset while also demonstrating the operational rigor required to drive high-priority transactions such as Defined Benefit plan buyouts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, own, and execute the global retirement strategy for all international markets ensuring alignment with BMS's broader People and Total Rewards strategy
  • Establish and maintain robust governance frameworks for all international retirement plans, including the facilitation of global governance boards, and mandatory local boards, trustee or oversight committees
  • Monitor global retirement trends, regulatory developments, market benchmarks, to proactively assess the competitiveness, funding, and sustainability of BMS's retirement offerings
  • Ensure all retirement plans remain fully compliant with local laws, tax regulations, and statutory requirements across all applicable jurisdictions, partnering with Legal and Finance to anticipate and respond to regulatory change
  • Lead the identification and mitigation of risks across the global retirement plan portfolio, including overseeing Defined Benefit plan buyouts and de-risking strategies from inception through to completion.
  • Lead the selection, onboarding, and ongoing performance management of global retirement consulting partners, actuaries, asset managers, and third-party administrators, including contract negotiation and accountability frameworks
  • Partner closely with People Operations to ensure the seamless delivery of plan administration across all international markets, serving as the strategic escalation point for complex or high-priority issues
  • Collaborate with Finance and Treasury on funding strategies, actuarial valuations, and financial reporting obligations, and with regional People Business Partners to ensure retirement programs are effectively communicated to BMS employees worldwide
  • Act as a visible and credible senior leader within the global People function, mentoring colleagues, contributing to Total Rewards capability development, and engaging confidently with senior stakeholders and governance bodies


Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree and 11+ years of progressively responsible positions in benefits, experience with international benefits programs and administration a must.
  • Experience with a full array of benefits programs including retirement plans, medical plans, wellbeing, life, AD&D, disability plans, inclusive benefit programs, Paid Time Off, work/life benefits, recognition and benefit allowances
  • Experience in analyzing competitive benefit practices. Solid technical knowledge of regulatory requirements.
  • Hands-on experience managing Defined Benefit plan activities, including funding strategies, actuarial processes, and buyout or de-risking transactions preferred.
  • Understanding of general HR principles and policies
  • Ability to lead project teams from the design to the implementation stage
  • Experience working in a matrix organization and Shared Service environment a plus
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and conceptual skills
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to travel occasionally

Compensation Overview:

Princeton - NJ - US: $191,680 - $232,265 Tampa - FL - US: $191,680 - $232,265

The starting compensation range(s) for this role are listed above for a full-time employee (FTE) basis. Additional incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility) may be available. The starting pay rate takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills, where the job is performed, the employee's work schedule, job-related knowledge, and experience. Final, individual compensation will be decided based on demonstrated experience.

Paid Time Off
  • US Exempt Employees: flexible time off (unlimited, with manager approval, 11 paid national holidays (not applicable to employees in Phoenix, AZ, Puerto Rico or Rayzebio employees)
  • Phoenix, AZ, Puerto Rico and Rayzebio Exempt, Non-Exempt, Hourly Employees: 160 hours annual paid vacation for new hires with manager approval, 11 national holidays, and 3 optional holidays


Based on eligibility*, additional time off for employees may include unlimited paid sick time, up to 2 paid volunteer days per year, summer hours flexibility, leaves of absence for medical, personal, parental, caregiver, bereavement, and military needs and an annual Global Shutdown between Christmas and New Years Day.

All global employees full and part-time who are actively employed at and paid directly by BMS at the end of the calendar year are eligible to take advantage of the Global Shutdown.

*Eligibility Disclosure: The summer hours program is for United States (U.S.) office-based employees due to the unique nature of their work. Summer hours are generally not available for field sales and manufacturing operations and may also be limited for the capability centers. Employees in remote-by-design or lab-based roles may be eligible for summer hours, depending on the nature of their work, and should discuss eligibility with their manager. Employees covered under a collective bargaining agreement should consult that document to determine if they are eligible. Contractors, leased workers and other service providers are not eligible to participate in the program.
