We are seeking a
Database Engineer to manage, support, and modernize our server-computing database infrastructure. In this role, you will champion a "Database as Code" philosophy, leveraging automation and programmatic systems management to ensure software currency, seamless patching, and optimal upgrades across our relational database management systems.
As a key technical resource, you will combine deep technical expertise with strong analytical problem-solving skills to support our mission-critical, high-volume database environments.
- Reports to: Senior Manager, Clearing Technology Services
- Job Location: Hybrid (2-3 days in office) - based in Toronto, ON.
Key Accountabilities- System Availability & Issue Resolution: Serve as the SQL Server Subject Matter Expert (SME) to resolve complex database issues. Lead short- and long-term root cause analysis, collaborate across engineering teams, and coordinate with external vendors during critical system events.
- Infrastructure Optimization: Identify, install, and configure database software and hardware requirements to build highly stable, modern, and high-performing database systems.
- Performance Tuning & Monitoring: Lead efforts to design and improve automated monitoring for database health and availability. Analyze performance metrics to recommend and execute tuning strategies across database configurations, storage, and application SQL queries.
- Disaster Recovery & Data Protection: Oversee routine backup audits, conduct regular test restores to validate data integrity, and actively participate in scheduled Disaster Recovery exercises.
- Strategic Standards & Collaboration: Enforce database engineering standards and partner with Development Squads and software vendors to design, review, and deploy database schema changes.
- Operational & Project Support: Deliver Level 2 escalation support for day-to-day operations and project execution, participating in a 24/7 on-call rotation to support our continuous operations.
Must Have(s)- Professional Experience: Minimum of 5 years of hands-on database management and administration experience.
- Database Expertise: Deep technical expertise in SQL Server, with additional working knowledge of Oracle and Postgres.
- Scale & Volume: Proven experience supporting real-time applications and large-scale, multi-terabyte (TB) databases.
- High Availability & DR: Strong hands-on experience with database data protection, Disaster Recovery design, high-availability setups, and Oracle RAC administration.
- Automation & Scripting: Strong programmatic mindset with excellent scripting skills (e.g., Powershell, Python, Perl) to automate deployments and support a "DB as Code" infrastructure model.
- Infrastructure & Cloud: Practical knowledge of Windows, Linux, Virtualization, and Cloud technologies.
- Soft Skills: Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with a collaborative team spirit and a big-picture delivery mindset.
Nice to Have(s)- Prior experience in the Financial Capital Markets industry.
- Experience executing complex data migrations between differing platforms or dissimilar environments.
Salary Range: $110K/year - $120K/year CAD. Please note that the salary range included is a guideline only. The salary offered may vary based on factors, including, but not limited to, the successful candidate's relevant knowledge, skills, and experience.
