Full Job Description
The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) Bureau of Enterprise Technology manages key departmental initiatives and drives data-driven decision-making. Its Data Quality unit is responsible for generating actionable insights through analysis, reporting, and visualizations. This unit also ensures accountability and transparency by compiling metrics for the Mayor's Management Report (MMR) and producing datasets for NYC Open Data. The Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) seeks a full-time City Research Scientist, L2 in the Data Quality Unit. With latitude for independent initiative and judgement, the Data Quality Analyst will assist the Department's in the making evidence-based decisions. Day-to-day responsibilities focus on data quality and insight delivery. This includes rigorously performing data quality checks and anomaly detection. The Data Quality Analyst will also support the building of interactive dashboards, primarily using Tableau and modern Python frameworks (Dash/Streamlit). Other core duties include swift fulfilling of ad-hoc data requests and designing appropriate metrics to track and report on departmental performance. This position will also participate in community outreach, especially in the context of Open Data which could include responding to public inquiries, representing the Department at Open Data Events and gathering feedback from the community. This is a crucial function that connects the FDNY's internal data efforts with the public, leveraging data transparency to enhance safety and build trust. CITY RESEARCH SCIENTIST - 21744 Qualifications 1. For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health) A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health. To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have: 1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or 2. A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or 3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in "2" above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in "1" and "2" above. NOTE: Probationary Period Appointments to this position are subject to a minimum probationary period of one year.
