POSITION SUMMARY: The Data Custodian Manager is responsible for establishing and maintaining the processes, standards, and operating procedures followed by the Data Custodian team, ensuring intake, triage, remediation, and data quality activities are executed consistently across supported data domains. The incumbent coordinates Data Custodians across multiple data areas, promotes adherence to enterprise data governance standards, and drives operational consistency as the function scales. The Data Custodian Manager is expected to manage a designated data domain and perform individual contributor responsibilities while providing leadership, guidance, and day-to-day coordination for the broader custodian team. The incumbent develops and maintains playbooks, checklists, and governance processes that support efficient execution and continuous improvement. In partnership with the Data Office, the incumbent applies established enterprise standards, templates, and tools, while supporting escalations, identifying systemic issues, and contributing to sustainable data quality solutions.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead the Data Custodian team, setting priorities, providing day-to-day direction and coaching, onboarding new custodians to the process, stepping in on escalated or cross-area issues, and carrying performance oversight for the custodians on the team.
- Carry an assigned data area, investigating suspect or flagged values, determining the correct value using source systems and business context, and carrying each correction through to the system of record.
- Serve as the single intake point for field reports and data change requests within the assigned data area, so records are corrected in a controlled way rather than edited directly in source systems and triage each issue into the correct category: working as intended, a data fix, a rule or definition question, or a systemic or enabler gap.
- Define and document the standard intake, triage, and correction process all Data Custodians follow, keep it current as new data areas, systems, and interim workflows are added, and confirm the team applies it consistently across data subject areas regardless of data steward or source system, in line with Enterprise Data Office objectives and methods.
- Partner with Business Data Stewards to translate business rules and quality thresholds into practical, repeatable data checks, and shares that pattern across the custodian team.
- Work with IT and Data Engineering so pipeline and automation logic reflects real operating conditions in the field.
- Monitor data completeness, accuracy, validity, timeliness, and reasonableness for assigned attributes against defined thresholds, review these measures across data areas to spot process gaps, and confirm data completeness and usability for a division before it goes live on DRIVE.
- Escalate recurring or systemic data gaps to technical or business teams for long-term resolution and identify where process changes are needed.
- Maintain clear, current documentation of the custodian process, and of how data is created, changed, and corrected within the assigned area.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned or apparent.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
- Prior experience leading a small team, or coordinating the work of other individual contributors, is preferred.
- Demonstrated success operating as a data custodian, data steward, data quality analyst, or similar hands-on data role within a large or matrixed organization.
- Experience defining or improving a working process for a team, such as an intake, triage, or issue-resolution workflow, and documenting it so others can follow it consistently.
- Experience leading, mentoring, or onboarding other team members, with a track record of staying hands-on in the work while doing so.
- Track record of investigating and resolving data-quality issues against defined business rules, thresholds, and quality dimensions (completeness, validity, accuracy, timeliness, reasonableness).
- Hands-on experience with modern cloud-based data platforms and governance technologies; Snowflake experience preferred.
- History of partnering with business, operations, and IT teams to keep field data accurate as an organization scales a program or platform.
- Prior experience in fleet management, routing and logistics, waste and environmental services, or another field-operations-heavy industry is helpful, as is familiarity with route optimization concepts such as service windows, container or asset attributes, and driver scheduling.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- 4 -7 years of experience in a data analyst, data quality, data operations, or data steward or custodian-type role.
This is a hybrid role requiring onsite presence in our Phoenix, AZ office. This candidate will be required to work onsite 4-days per week, with the option to work 1-day per week remote.
